Life has a very steady rugby program, both at the undergrad and "alumni" level. My old team from Seattle played Life University "alumni" team for the DI National Championship today. (We lost in a close one). I'm a bit confused by some of the organizational issues related to Rugby in the U.S., but my impression is that the Life team OPSB played today is similar to the Old Blues and Old Gaels teams that competed so well some years back. As for the undergrad team, Life is a powerhouse and is going to solid year in and year out. The team that really impressed me in this competition was Kutztown University. They gave a good accounting for themselves and the stories of how that team has won over their community are heartening. DKutztown is definitely a team I'll be paying attention to in the future. UCla, as I have said over and over, is really building. With a little extra effort, I can see the Bruins being a real force both in 15s and 7s in the very near future. Life will be solid for the foreseeable future, and Navy is always competitive. As for Cal, so long as Coach Clark keeps coaching, there is no need for worry. He not only knows the game well, but he manages his roster in a very smart way. Pappy Waldorf used to do the same kind of management of his players, giving younger players as much playing time as possible in situations where inserting them in the lineup doesn't jeopardize the team's chances of winning. This is one reason by time underclassmen get to their junior/senior seasons, they are well seasoned, well trained, and confident. And the freshmen and sophomores that played in the reserve side matches this year show amazing athleticism, and an understanding of the game that only comes from outstanding coaching. I can not wait to see what next year brings. The level of competition is getting better as others try to catch up to the Cal model, and the future of Pac Rugby looks very promising.
