What a whirlwind day. If only the football playoff worked so well.

Great to see the Bears win and to show great class on National TV. It did look like this one meant a lot to Coach Clark.
Go Bears!

Cal really put in on in this tourney. Very proud of the team. More later...I'm watching one of my old teams (Old Puget Sound) play Life University (graduates) in the Club Division 1 National Championship.

This is the first time I've watched rugby sevens. My wife and I really enjoyed it. Great, fast paced match ups. NBC did a good job I thought of explaining the game to us neophytes.

Congrats to our Bears for adding another NC trophy to the case.

Congrats Bears... Cal, the dominant 15s team seemed to have a tough time getting a roster that would convert to 7s play. Looks like they have turned the corner that allows championship play in both. Lots of frosh and sophs backs to compete in 7s. Should be a banner year in 2014 when 7s gets even more attention.

Cheers to Danny Barrett for a monster day to end his Cal career. I hope to see Jake Anderson's hurdle and try from 50m out against UCLA on SportsCenter as well. Lots of fun to see Cal play to their potential against a loaded Life team.

Cam Dolan from Life will play a lot of games for the National Team in the coming years. Life is terrible for the brand recognition of the sports. But they play great rugby down there. They've been a force at the men's club level for quite a while now, and their undergraduate program is really starting to develop now too.

Go Bears!

When was the game televised? I was watching CBS around 2 pm and the Notre Dame game was just starting. Since the telecast was scheduled to end at 3 pm, I assumed that the Final would be either tonight or tomorrow. Did I give up too early? If so, how could they cram two games into one hour? Just wondering.

Games in 7s competition consist of two 7 minute halves not 45 minute halves as it is for 15s.

ND vs. Delaware was the consolation bracket final. Sevens games are only seven minute halves and seven players on a side. You can easily fit two games into an hour. Final started around 2:20 I think.

Here was my favorite highlight of the day from the UCLA game:

Did the college 7s get that good of a coverage in previous years? This is such a TV-friendly game and event, high drama, great open-field continuous action and the game is accessible enough for those who aren't familiar with the sport, it could really blow up in years to come.

Life has a very steady rugby program, both at the undergrad and "alumni" level. My old team from Seattle played Life University "alumni" team for the DI National Championship today. (We lost in a close one). I'm a bit confused by some of the organizational issues related to Rugby in the U.S., but my impression is that the Life team OPSB played today is similar to the Old Blues and Old Gaels teams that competed so well some years back. As for the undergrad team, Life is a powerhouse and is going to solid year in and year out. The team that really impressed me in this competition was Kutztown University. They gave a good accounting for themselves and the stories of how that team has won over their community are heartening. DKutztown is definitely a team I'll be paying attention to in the future. UCla, as I have said over and over, is really building. With a little extra effort, I can see the Bruins being a real force both in 15s and 7s in the very near future. Life will be solid for the foreseeable future, and Navy is always competitive. As for Cal, so long as Coach Clark keeps coaching, there is no need for worry. He not only knows the game well, but he manages his roster in a very smart way. Pappy Waldorf used to do the same kind of management of his players, giving younger players as much playing time as possible in situations where inserting them in the lineup doesn't jeopardize the team's chances of winning. This is one reason by time underclassmen get to their junior/senior seasons, they are well seasoned, well trained, and confident. And the freshmen and sophomores that played in the reserve side matches this year show amazing athleticism, and an understanding of the game that only comes from outstanding coaching. I can not wait to see what next year brings. The level of competition is getting better as others try to catch up to the Cal model, and the future of Pac Rugby looks very promising.
