Eugene may be a "hippie" town but it's not a dirty hippie town like Berkeley. Emphasis on "dirty."

Santa Cruz deserves more consideration. They have more than a fair share of geriatric jew's harp players

I happen to live near Asheville and can vouch for Asheville as a legit top 5 hippy town. People in readlocks, kava lounges, hemp clothing, bongo players, hackysackers...it has it all. Without a doubt, the least southern city in the South. I love it because it reminds me of Berkeley. But sadly, no Top Dog and no Aduli's.

Where is Madison Wisconsin?....It used to be known as the "Berkeley" of the Midwest....

Really makes no sense. Having lived in both places, I can say that Santa Cruz is about 10x more of a hippie town than Oakland (and San Francisco, for that matter).

Having been to Madison is the last decade, I don't see how it didn't make the top 5. Bezerkeley had changed, Madison is still back in the early '70s. And while Republicans may rule the State government, the locals are very progressive. Maybe because everyone is on beer (it is the state's best product) rather than grass.

I was up in the Grass Valley/Nevada City area a couple of weeks ago.. I had no idea.

The town of Fairfax, in Marin County, claims a solid spot on this list. What with certifiable Jannis Joplin and Greatfull Dead residency, endless pot heads and miscellaneous 60's wannabes all aging into hazy, smoke filled hippie crankiness, a city administration philosophy which surely must be derivative of non negotiable demands, this town has it all.
