But someone in the NFL actually needs to want him.

If they are dropping out of school before the end of the semester, don't they count against the APR and grad rate?

Suppose this means he won't be listing his school as the University of California on Sundays next year (sarcasm intended).

Yes, but semester ended December 20.
Hopefully, they are leaving in good academic standing.

Go Bigs Go.

We need players who want to be here, not part-time students prepping for the pros.

Depends on how they leave (ie do they enroll for spring). Depends on the academic procedures at Cal too. It's before the semester now, so if someone is training in Texas for the combine, presumably they aren't enrolled, which would mean NO APR hit if they were eligible to end fall semester. Remember KA21 was training in North Carolina last spring? I don't know the mechanics of the scholarship and how much power the head coach has, but many people have said that Dykes is trying to enforce a policy to keep people from enrolling and then just failing. But scholarship are for a year I believe, so I'm not sure how SD can do such a thing if a player really wants to enroll.

I had a couple of friends (early 2000's) that were kind of slackers and figured out ways to milk the withdraw system at Cal - essentially one could withdraw very late into the semester (well past the add/drop deadline) and the transcript would only say WD for each class - they could replace the grade if they took it again, and I believe if they were passing at the time they withdrew, it didn't even count against their GPA in the interim.

Anyway, if you didn't see it, another thread had a link to a summary by a couple of Cal professors that, among other things, says much of the APR issue was due to exactly what you are worried about - passing fall, enrolling for spring (get financial support and access to the gyms), but concentrating fully on the NFL draft, failing out ungracefully, and ruining a chance of coming back to get a degree and of course our APR. Given the consequences of this type of failure, and the fact that other peer schools seemingly have better methods of dealing with it, it's too bad it wasn't addressed way earlier.

One question would be whether there is any kind of support we can provide these players while preparing for the NFL though facility use or financial aid that won't be dependent on them enrolling in classes they never intend to complete. Or are there smoother methods of late withdrawing that won't trigger the NCAA APR hit? Just saying a player is cut off from campus if preparing for the NFL draft might work, but it seems heavy handed.

He will likely stay in school, and not attend class like our other players he went to NFL.

The semester's been over a long time and he's leaving in good standing. He struggled a lot coming into this semester but finally got settle down academically.

As far as I know, none of the departures will hurt the apr, though at least a couple of them have had plenty of academic struggles.

This is just becoming ridiculous...hopefully, we'll get 2 wins in 2014.

"We want players who want to be at Cal." I am getting tired of this statement. If you hated a new manager at your job, you would absolutely consider other opportunities. Let's be real...I think it's safe to say that these kids are valued more as athletes than as Cal students. How come this statement isn't applied to basketball players who leave early?

If these kids truly want a degree, they can always go back to school. It is their dream to play in the NFL...if you had that opportunity, what would you do?

Problem is - it looks like no one wants to be here. The "you'll get an awesome education and degree" theory doesn't hold anymore.

I have never seen something happen like this with all the departures. If youth and inexperience were issues last year then what about 2014? That's 15 players gone from the team since the coaching change. Are there going to be anymore? We are extremely thin at certain positions and I'm not seeing replacements for the LBs that we have lost as well as other positions.

It sounds like the players haven't bought into the coaching staff and the system. The players that have "potential" NFL value see more value in leaving than buying into what this staff is saying and making the choice to take the shot at the next level.

I've never seen this many transfers from a D1 school in a 12-14 month period. People leaving the team during the season and mass departures after the season.

Either we had some players that weren't into the team or our staff has no respect from the players. I hope it is the former, but my sense tells me it will be the later. We could be heading for the dark ages of Cal football. We might see a total rebuilding job needed in the next few years.

Which league would that be, the league of unemployed college dropouts? Bigelow was not even one of the top 10 or 15 backs in the conference... Don't mean to be harsh, but he'd be much better off getting his degree while he still has a scholarship.

Actually we need players with game experience if we want to win, so yes. Experienced players are likely to improve faster than inexperienced players. It's also not like the guys we would be replacing them with are clearly more talented or anything, either.

I think he is better than what we saw. Tedford had no regard for him and the system now in place doesn't emphasize the run. And whether we think he will be good or bad in the NFL - he will be picked up by some team.

And you're still talking about the Cal degree?

Some teams will definitely consider him even with a horrible season he had if his knee checks out medically and can show that he's still got his speed.

Boy, you are very optimistic. Maybe Sac State. Other than that I don't see a W on the schedule based on the current roster.

Doesn't look like my seat partner and I are renewing our seats. He's frustrated, says it is no longer fun to go to games, and we can watch every game from the comfort of our living room. I might just buy the two seats myself and go to 2-3 games depending upon start times.
