Devastated that I didn't get into Cal today, as it had been my dream school my entire life. I'll always root for Cal, but probably won't be frequenting this board as often as I normally have.

Probably will be attending the University of Michigan or Washington next year, but I'm not really sure yet.

Wish you guys all the best! #GoBlue and #GoBears

Sorry to hear that, but it's not over. You can always transfer or go to grad school. Also, please choose Michigan over Washington. The Michigan alums I know are very successful and love their school.

Doh. Michigan's a great school, though. I have friends who went to Michigan for undergrad, and a lot that went to Michigan for grad school from Cal and they all loved it.

From a reputation perspective Michigan is head and shoulders above UW. That kind of stuff helps more than you can imagine when you're trying to look for jobs or during grad school admissions. I know we all hate USWNR for ranking Cal so low, but they have UM at 28 whereas UW is all the way down in the 50s, below UCLA,UCSD,UCSB,UCI, and UCD. Like it or not that's what a lot of people domestically look at when it comes to determining how impressive a degree is.

If he can become comfortable wearing purple, woofing like a tool, and rubbing shoulders with fuskie fans, he clearly wasn't meant to go to Cal

But if you do go to UW, please don't rub it in our faces when we get clownstomped next season.

Go to Michigan, at least the colors are the same and they are both flagship strong public universities! Good luck wherever you go though.

Don't stress, half (or more) of the old timers on here wouldn't get in these days either

If you reallllllllly really really really wanted to go to Cal you can always roll the dice and go down the JC route, but since you'd be giving up a great school like Michigan just for a chance at Cal I can't recommend that at all. Honestly, the quality of education and the quality of students at Cal aren't discernibly better, nor is the experience necessarily better; it's just a different experience.

Sorry to hear that, I can imagine how you must feel.

I've always been under the impression that if you are borderline and you want it bad enough, you can find a way in. People have appealed several times, or transferred after a semester. There are ways... But then again, maybe all that trouble is not worth it given that you also go into Michigan. It just depends on how badly you had your heart set on Cal.

It works sometimes.
Appeal due in 10 days or so/2 weeks???

Appeal committee is looking for any thing new that has happened to you, achievements, projects, awards, reasons etc .....that have happened since you turned in your application in November.

Used to be a one page only Appeal and had to be mailed in with post mark within 2 weeks of today. I think, Appeals were submitted on line last year, but you will have to read what your Decline info says about it.

If you want to talk about an Appeal, PM me.
SoCalBear323
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If you appeal don't write anything like "my grandfather and uncle went to Cal, I've always wanted to go to Cal."

Let them know that you're your own man, have autonomy and have formed your own concept as to how you would impact the Berkeley community. Be specific with examples that prove your potential.

As others have said, if Cal is your first choice you should definitely appeal the decision.

Also, consider living in Berkeley (at the Co-ops or one of the many student oriented apartment complexes near campus), attending Berkeley City College (right next to Downtown BART) and then transferring to UC as a junior. You can even take a class each semester on the Cal campus and pay community college prices. Go to football games and sit in the student section. You will save a lot of money versus out of state tuition at UM or UW--even save a lot of money versus 4 years of UC.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the support, it really means a lot.

The reason I would be hesitant to appeal is that I don't have any earth-shattering accomplishments that have occurred since I turned in my application in November. I guess I'll decide if I'm going to appeal in the next day or two.

The reason I'm still considering Washington, is because they gave me a scholarship and I got pre-admit into the business school, which would bypass a lot of stress my fresh and soph year. I'm still leaning towards Michigan, but I have to do my due diligence and checkout Washington.

Again, really appreciate the kind words. It's tough, but it's life.

btw 73,000 applicants this year. Just insane.

Your passion for Cal says a lot about you as does your intelligence and maturity. Whichever school becomes your alma mater will be fortunate to claim you. Fiat Lux.

Now, if you had been a 5 Star football player....:p Actually, being a Cal fan should automatically get you in..there are so few these days who would admit it..So, like someone mentioned 80,000 applicants and you MUST be proud to just be eligible! As a parent, I would be. So many of us here would never be admitted to Cal in today's world..I for sure wouldn't. Congrats on your accomplishments -- there is some good advice coming your way. Cal is tremendous, but happiness comes from within as my 3 kids learned, and I hope you find yours! I have some devastated seniors in my classes right now feeling your pain. Feel better knowing that I tell them they can always fall back and apply to Stanfurd!

Not that I recommend this, but I have a relative who did not get into Cal, but the next day got admitted to the junior university over there. Point is, everything does happen for a reason. Who knows, maybe you're supposed to meet your wife in Michigan and she didn't apply to Cal. Or other good things, etc.

What about the yield? Was there any word in their letter about "wait list?"

Easy decision "JahvidFast". Definitely choose Michigan over UDumb. Had to console my friend's niece today as she was devastated by her rejection letter from Cal as well. The funny thing is, I have a feeling she'll be getting into Stanford next Tuesday when they release their decisions. :p

Admissions can be such a crapshoot. The admissions criteria can be so opaque and often times politically driven. Who really knows what the admissions officers are thinking from one day to the next. You should never think any less of yourself for not getting into a particular school. Your education and career is a marathon. One of my fav profs at Cal is an admitted slacker who went to UC Riverside when it was just a new school, and because he found his life passion while in college, he is now one of the foremost experts in his field. You can still go to Cal one day - be hardworking and successful and they will pay you to come teach here. Go Bears and forever good luck!

Sorry to hear about that bro, but if you really want that Cal degree just go to DVC. If you could get into UDub or Michigan out of highschool, getting into to Cal from Jr college should be a breeze. It was for me
oskigobears

About 42% or so commit of the Cal Admits, so Admissions over Admits to cover that....to get to the size of the FTE they want for the year.

20% out of state

Cal only takes junior transfers ...no sophs.

The pathway from junior colleges is direct and works...obviously keeping your grades up.

Some years Cal has wait list, some years not.
Don't know this year.

I have known Appeals who have gotten in for fall.
More seem to be delayed for Jan admit.

Appreciate it, means a lot.

As to others asking about the yield, they did not specify how many people they admitted into the university.

I was in the same position one year ago JahvidFast. Was devastated when I got rejected from Cal, appealed and did not get in. I ended up at Cal Poly purely because of the business school (wish I applied to Michigan because I think I would have got in). I'm through two quarters with a 4.0 and getting basically 100s in my business classes so the hope is to keep the grades up and get in for grad school. It's definitely tough at first to cope with the fact you didn't get in and some others did but in the end you will always be able to follow Cal with the help of the great contributors here at BI. And I've heard that football stadium they have up at Michigan is a pretty cool place to watch a game.

There's also the Extension Fall Program for Freshmen:

http://fpf.berkeley.edu/

That's how I got in. Basically, your official admission gets deferred to the Spring, and you take full-credit courses during the Fall through Extension. I was a Mechanical Engineering major, and three other guys in my graduating class ('93) were admitted in this manner.

I think you have to be admitted to the school to do that.

You may want to file an appeal and elaborate on some point that was not fully explained in your original application or something new. Also make sure to mention that you are willing to start in the Spring Semester.

This helped get the sons of two very good friends into Cal for the Spring Semester. There are a certain number of appeals that are granted based upon how many slots remain open for the Fall and for the Spring (more for the Spring than for the Fall).

If you want to play it safe, take the position at UM or UW and pay the deposit. But keep your appeal in place. If you get into Cal for the Spring (you will know not later than July), all you lose is your deposit at UM or UW.

If you are admitted for the Spring, in the Fall you can still participate in most activities for Cal Students. In fact you can take Cal Extension classes to satisfy basic requirements such as English Subject A.

Yes - you're correct. I must have been offered Spring admittance, and given the option for FPF. Realized that after reviewing the program's website. Sorry.

Do not go to community college with the hope of potentially making it in as a juco transfer. That's a terrible idea. First of all, you'd be missing out on a great college experience (socially, your freshman year is your most important). Even if you have excellent grades at your local juco, there's no guarantee that you'd be admitted to Cal in your major of choice.

I graduated from Foster and imo, it's not a great program. Recruiting on campus is weak, unless you're an accounting major. UW is strong in the sciences and in engineering.

Ross at Michigan is one of the elite business programs in the country. Michigan has a great reputation in both Southern and Northern California. Even if you don't major in business, the Michigan brand and alumni network is pretty strong.

Also, Ann Arbor >>>> Seattle
