USC is reportedly in negotiations to form merger with Scripps Research Institute. The move would bring USC more prestige as a research university and help Scripps, which is having financial difficulties.

SC seems to have deep pockets and they are using their resources to become a major research player. This follows an earlier move in which they poached a brain research institute from UCLA.

I won't be surprised to see USC continue its ascent in academic prestige in the coming years.

You can't buy prestige. Maybe in a 100 years people will view U$C as a prestigious institution.

You don't have to convince old farts, just the youngsters.

being at UCLA currently in research...them poaching three brain research scientists really is non-news to us. UCLA poaches USC scientists all the time. UCLA med also just took away Doheny Eye Institute away from USC Keck. It's just really non-news in Los Angeles since it's expected that scientists want to make the move from USC to UCLA.

Agreed that USC buying Scripps would be big, but the gap in biomedical research between the two is hard to bridge.

They're hoping that Scripps will bolster their football program.

Scripps merging with UCSD would make much more sense given their geographical proximity. I'm not sure how USC will manage logistics if they have their biomedical sciences split by what, 120 miles? Will students and faculty be expected to split research at labs, teaching/taking classes, giving talks?

They should be able to come up with something better than the stanford glove.

I think the train just pulled out of the station and you're still standing on the platform. I'm just glad I graduated Cal when I did and when what you wrote was true. The heavy hitters willing to invest in Cal are dying off. Do you think the current crop that won't even attend the games are going to provide financial support in the future?

$C becoming a good school finally is actually good for the whole conference.

And good for Los Angeles and the state of California.

Still, Scripps and UCSD should merge.

+1 Also, no way we should ever be intimidated by U$C's newfound academic status.

Actually it does, as long as the money is spent wisely.
Research output takes money. If you're willing to spend and spend right, you'll get it.
No institution was prestigious when it was first established. And if we waste money, we will lose it.

I think you are confusing "heavy hitters" who donate to Cal's academics with "heavy hitters" who donate to Cal's athletics. There are many more of the former than of the latter. And don't forget the government grants that are responsible for many of the new buildings on campus.

No, but if they had a football team they could probably win one league game.
