with all of the no-huddle, up-tempo offenses these days and games dragging on well past four hours and 200+ plays, has there been any consideration to changing NCAA rules so that the clock doesn't stop after a first down? i think this would shorten the game a decent amount, make it more similar to NFL rules, give us a little bit more of our Saturdays back to spend with our families... what do you guys think?

I like the time stoppage after every first down.

But, then you'd be driving for the go ahead score inside 2 minutes and need those extra seconds. And, the refs will still stop the snap until the other team has a chance to sub, if you have subbed.

The fact is that whatever rules are set up, humans will find a way to maximize their return under them, whether it's sports or laws. But, it's not a bad idea to change them once in a while, since, left in place too long, humans will approach their boundaries...until we exceed them, even by a hair's breadth at first.

I do not like the time stoppage after first down.

I prefer it to the "2 minute warning, which is an extra timeout.

i'm cool with stopping after first downs at the end of halves, agree that it's better than the 2 minute warning. but to stop after every first down the entire game is, IMO, pretty unnecessary.

Not a bad idea! Being that we have a hell of time burning minutes/seconds off the clock! Could have used that rule in AZ!

I agree, I love college football but something has to be done to reduce the length of games. 5 hours is just too much time to devote. I'd be down with having a running clock after first downs (for the final two minutes of halves the clock could stop completely).

I like the rule stopping the clock after first downs. It creates more opportunities for exciting comebacks. Today's fast paced offenses do not add much to the total time for games, if any, because in general there is less time between plays. A few years ago the NCAA changed the rules to start the clock faster on out-of-bounds plays. As a result, most games today, even with the fast paced offenses, last about 3.5 hours. That is short enough. There is no need to change the first down rule.

Are we talking about why the clock stops after the offense earned a first down? If so, how do you expect the chains to accurately measure where the first begins and ends? Until they institute a laser gun to measure 10 yards which is reflected on the field, we have to continue using chains.
