Explain this: random girls on sidelines

So a friend and I were wondering: sometimes, you see random students, usually female, standing around on the sidelines during college FB games seemingly doing nothing. What's the deal with that?

Here's an example. Cal vs Tennessee in Knoxville (which I rewatched a little for some sick reason). The camera occasionally showed this girl standing near the endzone corner, closer to the cameras than the players. Tall brunette, wearing a Cal T-shirt, short cutoff jean skirt, and flip flops. The weird thing is that she seemed to have no reason for being there. Usually someone like that would be waving a giant flag with "Cal" on it, or some such Rally Comm duty, but not her. She was just standing around. At one point when we went down 35-0, she appeared to be texting on her phone, which is why I remember her - that was funny.

My friend and I have noticed this at a few other games since then, both on TV and live.

What are these people doing on the field? Can anyone solve this mystery?

Medical staff is often on the sideline with nothing to do. My wife used to cover junior division college games and still covers high school games. Before we had kids I would go stand on the sideline with her. One time, at a high school game, I got into the game and was moving up / down the sideline following the line of scrimmage. One of the assistant coaches rounded up a few players who suddenly surrounded me on the sideline and asked me what I was doing there. I stuck by my wife's side after that.

it could be a variety of reasons. Just cause they're wearing gear, doesn't mean they're students. They could be family members of a recruit on a visit.

I'm sure there are random guys too...you just don't notice them.

Former players get field passes all the time. They bring "friends."

When the TV announcers say "and he will head to the sidelines for a blow". ... I guess I know what that means now.

I remember one sideline reporter claimed a Colts kicker was checking her out during the closing minutes of a playoff game (and then went on to miss a game-tying kick and lose the game). If only the Cal-Tennessee 2006 game came down to that, it would have been hilarious if the same thing happened for us.

Don't they sometimes let recruiting targets for other sports down on the field? In one of the Olympic threads there are photos of women's swim recruits down on the field and they are wearing Cal gear.

Actually I have seen that, and have wondered the same. There's always like 1 sometimes 2, quite attractive ladies, standing around down there. They don't seem like family (who are usually hanging out / talking to other family members) or medical staff (usually wears khakis and a polo shirt).

At Cal home games, medical staff area is north end 25 yd line-ish, khakis and golf shirt.
The last couple of years, there have been two easy on the eyes ladies more or less under the north goal post area taking pics of the crowd.....I'm guessing for some sort of future marketing scam. People milling around the corners tend to be marketing as well. Folks that are on the field these days either paid money to, or make money for, Cal Athletics. I had a field pass from 2000-2003, then I joke that Adam Duritz got my pass...... he was there, I wasn't.

My guess is that the girl mentioned in my OP was doing something "marketing" related at Cal-Tennessee 2006, and so were all the others.

She didn't look like the family (of a recruit, former player, or whatever) and definitely not medical staff. There's probably a few random marketing-related things that need doing at every game, and are done more easily by tall brunettes in short jean skirts.

well...at the USC game I got a sideline pass and went down with my fiancee and yes, she's VERY easy on the eyes and yes, she has zero connection except for me and I'm just a random alumnus so....there's lots of ways for randomness on the sidelines
