The 1975 team will be honored at the USC game this week:

"White will be at Memorial Stadium on Saturday for a ceremony honoring the 1975 team, which never lost a home game under Roth."

My freshman year was Joe Roth's senior season. His life was inspirational and tragic.

Are they pulling out the throwbacks on Saturday?

IIRC, they're contractually-obligated to not use them this year but hope to start once a year for the Roth Memorial game next year (unless that was the case last year and they start using them this year).

I hope if our team has any respect for Joe Roth, to go out there with no fear and play their best game of the year.

They don't have a Muncie, but Lasco can channel him and JG can pull a Roth. Joe's O-line while not big worked well as a unit per the comical those days and were effective.

Regardless, I'll be there for Joe and the team that gave us the best football experience we'd had for a very long time.

GO BEARS!

Is that a Nike thing? If so they are even more soulless than I had imagined. You'd think they could see their way to making an exception here.

It might be, but if so: Nike probably gave those to us for free as part of our deal. We could have kept them and used them whenever we wanted. Instead, we auctioned them off. Which is fine. But I don't blame Nike for limiting how often they replace a team's uniforms - they shouldn't really be expected to keep supplying new uniforms for almost 100 players, especially after the team sells them.

Can't wait to see clips of Joe guiding that 1975 team. Was at the Big Game at Stanfurd that year. Muncie was a man among boys, Joe Roth was the best college qb in the country. We beat SC but couldn't get by UCLA so no Rose Bowl, but I have no doubt that we were definitely top 10 and by the end of the season nobody wanted to play us.

Hmmmm. I think I missed the auctioned them off thing, but then I am admittedly way, way behind the curve on all things uniform related. Why did we do that (other than the obvious - to make money) if we wanted to use them again? That seems odd.

They were auctioned off so I can look at a helmet each morning in my office and start the day off with a smile on my face.

It was shortly after that game was played. Here's a link: http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/stories/111007afa.html

DISH national feeds are only showing it Sunday morning. For some reason, even though I'm in the Bay Area, I'm not getting the Bay Area feed so I can't watch it tonight.

Really annoying.

Great film, though. Can't wait to see it again.

I think it is a Nike thing. I think not wearing them after our request was just a one year deal but like I said, I don't remember if the one year wait was last year or this year.

I don't think Cal was with Nike when the throwbacks were worn in '07. Wasn't it Adidas?

We've had Nike since 2003.

Yeah, you're right. I went back and looked at my Lynch and Roth throwback jerseys and both are Nike.

Sonny was the one who told me they'd like to wear the Roth throwback once a year for the Roth Memorial game but that they contractually couldn't do it for one year. Pretty sure that conversation was this last summer.

We'll find out soon enough.

Thanks again to GoCal80 and others who kept this thread resurrected.

Finally got to watch Don't Quit: The Joe Roth Story this evening, and I'll be darned if the documentary didn't get this old cranky grayhair a little watery-eyed.

Talk about the All-American boy. Just a really nice movie, and should be required viewing for any Cal fan and for any human being with a pulse and a heart.

I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary. I wish to thank all who worked so hard to make it a reality.

Joe was one mighty special young man and we should be honored that he is a Golden Bear. It is people like Joe and Andy Smith who make Cal sports so endearing for me.

Saw him play and followed his tragic story as it unfolded. This man (kid) was a real class act. Young people today need better role models, I suggest they start with Joe Roth. Grrrrah......Go Bears.

I watched the contest that they had with the Trojans 40 years ago on YouTube. The Bears, it would seem, certainly had some underrated players on that team. I do hope that they can channel that energy into a decisive win forty years later.

Steve Rivera? He wouldn't happen to be related to Ron Rivera, the Panthers' coach?

You're being sarcastic, aren't you? The 1975 team led the nation in total offense -- 229 ypg rushing and 229 ypg passing.

Was in San Diego on business twenty years ago and met with Joe's older brother John. He had a life size poster of Joe from the Japan Bowl in his office. At the end of the meeting, I told him my dad had taken me to the first Joe Roth Memorial Game in 1977. Bears beat 'SC and there was pandemonium in Berkeley after the game. One of my all-time favorite days with my late dad and the day I truly fell in love with Cal. Given the context, '77 'SC game means more to me than the '82 Big Game.

Tracy Lagos who appears in the film was a Cal cheerleader who married one of Joe's teammates Ken McAllister. Their son Drew was a highly recruited East Bay prep QB who ended up playing safety at 'SC for Pete Carroll.
