Good chance you'll be facing a true freshman QB when the Longhorns come to town

True freshman Shane Buechele (clearly, in the fans' eyes) outplayed senior Tyrone Swoopes in the spring game, and Jerrod Heard has been hurt the last 2 weeks. Thus, I'm fairly certain Buechele will be the starter in September.

On one hand, I think it's the right decision (he already seems to be a step ahead of Swoopes), and on the other it's unbelievable that we find ourselves in this position in Charlie Strong's 3rd year.

Only consolation, ability aside, is that you have QBs coming in rather than the revolving QB doors at other TX schools.
We have a couple of "warmup" games against respectable opponents so hopefully our front 6 D (4-2-5) will be ready for the Longhorn surge into Berkeley.

Why isn't Heard the presumed starter?

hasn't been much of a surge the last few years, I think Berkeley will be safe - it won't be like that tOSU game from a few years back (I was on hand for that massacre - both on the field and in attendance in the stands)

outside of his game against Cal, he really was ineffective for much of the remainder of the season, to the point that Swoopes started getting a bunch more snaps

Heard wasn't reported to be lighting it up in the early part of Spring - it will be interesting to see what he does; I still think if he can just "kinda get it" then he's a better backup than Swoopes solely because of the potential for explosive off schedule running plays

The fact that Heard could not totally unseat Swoopes last year meant the Longhorns would be in trouble the next few seasons. Yet they can still beat OU.

They may have QB issues but defense recruiting has been up to snuff

This guy is probably going to throw for +300 yards and 3 TDs against us.

Buechele is the son of Steve Buechele, currently a coach for the Texas Rangers and former Furd ....

Another one of his sons was drafted by the Giants but didn't go very far professionally in baseball

Nice problem for the Horns to have

Did any Qbs in 2015 throw for 400 yard vs Cal?

That game turned out to be a mirage on both sides. Cal's pass defense was absolutely atrocious that game. We made Heard look like an All American. As often happens, some Cal fans assumed it was because Heard was awesome despite the fact there was no real evidence for that outside of the Cal game.

On the flip side, while Cal's defense looked every bit as bad as it had for two years, they did shore things up. It wasn't good, but it was by and large competent the rest of the year which was a significant upgrade.

Basing how good Texass's qb will be from how he does against Cal would be a mistake.

Heard didn't look like a good passer, which is why I'm not surprised he struggled the rest of the year. A lot of his throws were to wide open guys with non-existent Buh level coverage. He's a squirrly, legit runner though.

Does anyone really think it matters who Texas trots out as the QB? He will have a career day against us. We still could win though. That's the beauty of a Sonny Dykes football program.

It wouldn't have been close if Anderson had held onto the pass from Goff.
This is going to be Texas on the road in a hostile environment with a freshman QB with only two games under his belt. Not a good recipe for success.

ah, don't spoil the fun of the neeners ... it's going to be a while before the season starts so they need to wallow.
TX 59-2, 450yds passing to 153 for Cal, 278 yds rush-Cal 27yds, ... what'd I miss ... :p

First road start is statistically usually the worst of a quarterbacks career (see Jared Goff, @ Oregon, 2013). I hope it plays out that way.

Also Texas won only 1 road game last year, and that was against a Baylor team with no quarterbacks.

Cal may win the game, but pass along the stat for most yards passing in a game by a Texas freshman when you get a chance...Cal's D has been helping re-write schools' record books over the last 3 years....

Be of good cheer because TX will be facing a bunch of freshman on our side also.
Weaver, dRob, Stovall, et.al. ... lots of freshmen ...
