Turns out, Goff has an enzyme deficiency that didn't allow him to break down proteins. Typical nutrition sources where athletes load up to add bulk and muscle didn't work for Goff, which finally explained why no matter how much he ate, he didn't seem to be able to fill out. His body didn't process red meat. Every college athlete chugs whey protein shakes, but they didn't work for Goff either. Nothing seemed to.

"We had to adjust his diet and implement probiotics and get him on amino acid supplements," Flaherty said. "He's eating lots of lean chicken, turkey and fish. Working on his diet was the big unlock for him.

"We saw big changes in Jared. The biggest thing was seeing advances in his strength."

Do we have nutritionists on staff? Why can't we do bloodwork for all of our athletes to see if dietary adjustments need to be made for them to hit their target weight?

I think this diet will have Goff sound as a pound in no time:

Wow. That's very interesting and presumably widely known by those NFL GMs looking for a QB. One more check on the Jared checklist...skinny, can he take a hit? Just get a good nutrionist and solve that problem.

I believe a nutritionist is one of two key positions that Sonny has been fighting our AD to budget for.

I've said this before but will reiterate - not sure of any study that shows a correlation between size and injury proneness. Isi Sofele and Khalfani are two of our smaller backs and had relatively injury free careers (knock on wood for Khalfani as he finishes his career here) in a tough position. Dasarte Yarnway and Lasco were specimens who had trouble staying on the field. People said Maynard couldn't take a hit but he was largely injury free at Cal and I don't know if he ever cracked 170 lbs. Tom Brady has been pretty durable and isn't a thick guy either. Injuries are a funny thing and some guys are just magnets while others seem to miraculously avoid them.

Goff had a healthier college career than Wentz and most of it was as a 180-190 lb twig so I would expect him to have better health at the next level too. Not saying extra muscle will hurt Goff, but not sure it will really make a big difference. It's not like he's going to bulk up his ankles, knees, collarbones, etc.

This is an area I don't know anything about. I wonder what the cost of a 2000 panel blood test costs? Is it something programs with nutritionists as part of the support staff do for their teams? Anyone know if NFL teams have this available to each of their players as part of an ongoing nutritional program and if so how often it is done?

If this was not the case, I think you would pretty much be disqualified from expressing any opinions on BI.
