Travel questions for Oregon State Game

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Am thinking about attending the game and wondering if our Oregon Residents can share their thoughts:

  • Would it be possible to make it to the game on time with a flight arriving in Portland at 2:45 PM? Google shows the drive as being 1 hour and 38 minutes to Corvallis but I seem to recall a lot of game day traffic coming across the river and into town. Worried this would be cutting it too close to allow for traffic, parking etc.

  • Any suggestions for hotels in Corvallis? Hopefully one near a nice Sports Bar?

Thanks in advance and Go Bears!

I think you're cutting it close - figure with renting a car (?) you'd be leaving PDX about 3:15 - 3:30. Figure two hours drive, with no traffic, and you're in Corvallis at 5:30. Parking close to the stadium will be tight at that time - so if you have to park in Corvallis and shuttle - add another half hour or so.

Hotels in Corvallis - I can't help much. I do know there's a Hilton Garden Inn right next to the stadium - but I betcha that sells out, with corresponding much higher rates, for home games for the Beavs. But hey - maybe worth a shot - last minute cancellations?

p.s. did anyone ever identify which section is for Cal Fans? I have been on two different trips in past years and prior to the stadium remodel the Cal Section was in the end zone, pretty sure it was the South end zone. Anyone know the Cal Sections?

p.p.s. agree that time is cutting to too close and will look for an earlier flight!

As someone who routinely flies in for either the Oregon or Oregon State game with less time than you'll have, I'll say yes, if you get a good enough deal to justify cutting it somewhat close and don't have a great need to be there much before kickoff.

The airport is on the outer NE side of town. That adds some time to the trip vs. coming from Portland, proper. That 1:38 estimate that you are getting seems a bit optimistic to me. I live on the other side of town, an easy 20-25 minutes from the airport. Maybe a month ago at 6am when there was zero traffic it took me 1:15 to drive to Trysting Tree golf course - which isn't all the way to Corvallis. I would plan for 1:45 to 2 hours of actual drive time. Add in some time to get off the plan, get luggage, get a rental car. My guess is you get into Corvallis in the 5:15-5:30 range.

Heads up - Oregon is playing at home this Saturday. That shouldn't impact your drive time down to Corvallis because the Ducks start earlier but it probably will add time on the return trip to Portland.

According to the PDX Cal group, the Cal sections are 125 and 126, in the corner of the end zone ($80 from the ATO). I got tickets on stubhub for about the same cost, but on the 40 yd line and under cover in case it rains (but current forecast up here calls for a dry nice day!). Go Bears!

Game day traffic can be tough. A lot fans travel to Corvallis and Eugene from Portland. Luckily the Ducks/UW game starts at 4:30P so the traffic is not going to be as bad as if the Oregon game started at 7PM. Regardless, you will be cutting it close. It will tough to find a hotel in Corvallis. You might find one in Albany which is on the way back to Portland (not far from Corvallis). Good luck.

I've come up for the last 12 UO or OSU games and there are always dire warnings about traffic but I've never experienced more than a minor inconvenience, even when frequently cutting it close with same day flights.

What about parking? Any suggestions?

Not much help there because I'm always assigned a media spot but I see people walking up the road the stadium's on in big numbers so if you're willing to walk 1/4 to 1/2 mile, there seems to be ample parking within reasonable walking distance.

Well, whether you hit traffic certainly involves luck: whether the traffic happens to be more spread out, or whether you happen to be there when a bigger number happens to hit the road. And of course, backups if there's an accident or any road construction (I don't think there are any major construction projects going on 99W right now).

Since the Ducks-Huskies kick at 4:30 in Eugene, that traffic should have all passed by the time folks are going to Corvallis.

I've often found free parking (and I mean FREE .....) in the residential areas just south-west (??) from the stadium. Don't know if you'll have luck if you're getting there too close to kickoff .... and I'm sure the local residents don't appreciate it much either....

Looking at Google maps - this would be the area south of SW Western Blvd but north of Hwy 20. Yell extra loud for me....

There is also (been a while since I've used it, tho) a shuttle that runs from selected parking lots in beautiful downtown Corvallis - which is where the beer is ....
