Mezzo and Raleigh's share the same space and same kitchen, share same bathroom and same patio. Sign on patio door reads "No Children On Patio After 5. Raleigh's opens at 5. Raleigh's serves food that Mezzo does not. Most tables at Mezzo are small. Tables at Raleigh's are booths. Workers stated that owners don't want kids in patio or Raleigh's because Raleigh's serves alcohol and they don't want to get in trouble with ABC. Restaurants, which Raleigh's is, is a public place.
Raleigh's won't allow anyone under 21 into its front door, but anyone ..... other than a young kid, can enter Raleigh's via the back or front walk way or patio........ yesterday Mezzo at 5:30 was standup only, Raleigh's was virtually empty, the patio was 25% full.

Do want to go there for food, beer or wine?
Or do you just want access?
Is their food good, excellent or disappointing?
Do they brew their own root beer?
Are Mezzo and Raleigh's the kind of places that a Mother would bring an infant and breast feed the child? Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Do they have a menu for pre-teens and "ankle biters"?

What is the nearest family friendly alternative?

Move to Brooklyn. Babies and strollers at the bar is a thing there.

We went a couple weekends back. The food was exactly as I remembered. But I saw the same sign as you and was puzzled. A couple bars in SF have done the same thing. For example, Southern Pacific Brewery went from kids are allowed, to kids are allowed until 5pm, to kids are banned altogether. As a parent of young kids, it's frustrating but there are other places to take my business. At the same time, I get it. Not every bar (outdoor or not) needs to be teeming with toddlers. There should be a few spaces where adults can go and kids cannot.

In my opinion, Mezzo/Raleigh's should just block off the upper patio. That'd allow some space for families, and some for adults. It'd keep kids away from the cornhole/bocce, too, which is an endless annoyance for me (both re my own kids and others) as kids take over those games and throw from 3 feet away, and if you ask the parents to keep the kids way, you come off as a jerk and the kids throw a fit.

Raleigh's is not a bar. McNalley's is a bar, The Graduate is a bar, the Hottsie Tottsie is a bar, The Bear's Lair is a bar..... Raleigh's is a restaurant, a public place, with a license to sell beer and wine....
Similar to Fat Slice, Pappy's (though they have a full liquor license), the Faculty Club, the I House, etc.
I suspect that Raliegh's received its license to sell beer and wine because it was a restaurant.
If they want to be a bar, fine....get a bar license, not a restaurant permit and pretend its a bar.
Michelle Ent, manager, calls them both "restaurants".
"The two restaurants have separate ordering and seating areas — with Mezzo on the left and Raleigh’s on the right — but are connected inside. They also share a back courtyard and bathrooms. Visitors to either establishment will be able to freely flow back and forth between the two.

It's possible that the pH level of their water is too low and they don't want to rot the teeth of children. :p

Does it work for them if patrons choose not to familiarize themselves with all their rules and simply go elsewhere?

It's generally lame when places that serve food and have a proper kitchen don't allow kids, especially when they are physically connected to another establishment that does. I think this is one of those weird American puritanical traditions but hey, it's their choice to be stupid.

Low pH dissolves teeth, not rot them

This doesn't seem unreasonable to me. It's a college bar and the types of people drinking on the patio at night might not want to self-censor the way they would with kids on the patio. It sounds like they will still allow children on the patio for weekend days which is great for families that are hanging out pregame. Maybe I'm just saying that selfishly because I don't live in Berkeley and the only time I would ever go to Raleigh's with my kids would be during a nice afternoon in the fall ...

Raleighs doesn't open until 5pm.
It's not a bar, it's a restaurant.....that's what they got a permit for.
You can hang in the patio with your family all you want until 5.......as long as you only want salad and don't wish to have a beer......Mezzo doesn't sell beer, or anything but soup salad and sandwiches.....no Raleigh Burger, fries, onion rings or nachos until 5.
And you can't bring beer from Raleighs to Mezzo.....so you better like mint lemonade or kombucha.

Oh, and did I mention......No Cash, only cards.

Yeah, it's a little weird that they don't open earlier on weekends but it only recently reopened. I would assume when kids are back in school they will re-open for weekend days and possibly more.

They are clearly clearly discouraging people to bring children right now. As a person with children, that makes it a lot less interesting to me as a customer, but they must think they are gaining more than they are losing by discouraging people like you (and me) from patronizing their business.

Would you have taken your children to the old Raleighs after 5pm on a weekend?

Sure why not? Or to put it another way, I wouldn't go to Raleighs after 5pm on a weekend without my children. My kids aren't yet old enough to where it would make sense to do so but if they were a few years older and attending a night game with me, I think the back patio at Raleighs is as hospitable as any other place I would want to be in Berkeley.

My patronage of Berkeley is limited to gamedays and given the age of my children (young) and the prevalance of night time games, family attendance is basically a non-starter for me.

I don't see what the big deal is. Granted, I don't have children. There are tons of family friendly options in Berkeley. Take the family to a place that wasn't your college drinking establishment. A bar/restaurant is going to make a lot more $ from a grown up that's drinking and eating than it will from occasionally selling chicken fingers to kids and a burger and beer to their parents.

I've only ever seen a handful of kids in Raleigh's, but they also seemed to like using the shuffleboard table. Fire aside, Raleigh's ownership has a pretty good idea what level of business they did when children were allowed. If business is adversely affected, they'll revise accordingly.

Faculty Club and Jupiter are the only spots where I've ever seen large numbers of kids on game days.

2th, go check out Cornerstone at Shattuck and Durant if you're looking for a family friendly bar/restaurant. I was at an event there tonight and for sure they allow kids. The space is nicely done with the back wall opening to a large patio. There are also ping pin tables inside. There's a large beer selection and full bar with decent bar food too.

With or without the baby? BTW, I'd never provide alcohol to anyone under the age of five. They already act drunk at that age.

LOL!! You realize we, at least me, don't expect Raleigh's to be Chuckee Cheez.
I expect it to be equally welcoming like Pappy's, Free Speech Movement Cafe, Brennan's, Chez Panisse, Wood Tavern, etc.....neither of which have chicken fingers.
And I guess you haven't been there yet........ it's pretty empty.
Oh...and by the way.....children are anyone under 21.
They ID at the door.
So should you have a freshman or sophomore or may be a young junior at Cal.....you couldn't have a burger and beer while he or she had their chicken nuggets and juice.
Cheers!!

Sure, but you don't have to be able to take them everywhere, just because you legally can. I have a 3-year old and an 11-month old. As I said, Southern Pacific Brewing banned kids - despite serving food, etc., after having been a family-friendly place. They made a business decision - they must feel the kids running around the place were deterring non-kid customers, who spend much more in food/beers than kids (obviously) and even parents. That's their decision. I find it annoying, but there are plenty of other places I can go to get food and a beer, while my kids tag along.
