Don't know how often this tune has been played this season, but can't we make it a permanent item? It seemed like everyone joined in at CMS on Friday night. Yes, it was sung when the game was in the bag, but that shouldn't make any difference., Red Sox fans stay sometimes until 2 a.m. to sing this song and they have a blast doing it. Why can't we? It shouldn't matter if we win or lose, let's just sing!

I love the idea of us singing something, but it sort of seems like we're copying the Red Sox. Maybe we could sing a Cal song, or come up with our own popular tune.

If we end up doing Caroline, I'm not opposed to it or anything: Better than nothing! And not "piped in"! (sorry, MB, lol, couldn't resist).

I love Cal's traditions, but am not big on replicating others'. The more we can reinforce our own, the better.

I like the hit he wrote for the Monkees better.

Yeah, marketing dept. would like nothing more than us to copy someone else. It's been their M.O. since the rebuild of CMS.

If Cal's going to do something vocal at the end of the game, then why not do "Hail to California". Doesn't Cal Band do this at the end of the game anyway? RallyComm stays for it. Just get it into the minds of the students. Too late for this year, but starting next year, why not? Seems that's more Cal, and a natural extension of the game.

Meh, as long as nobody else in the P12 does it, I'm cool with it.

We're ripping off a team that's not only pro (not college) but in a different SPORT, for crying out loud. At that point, it's not a ripoff, it's paying homage (to an incredibly cool tradition at Fenway).

And it's certainly cooler than furd's stupid use of "All Right Now".

My regret is that I didn't get my phone out fast enough to video the Sweet Caroline moment. If anyone has a video of it, could you post it on YouTube? Thanks in advance!

Because "Hail to California" is a terrible choice of song at the end of a win. This was a time of celebration, good times, and enjoyment. "Sweet Caroline" was sung during the game with a feeling of elation. Love to sing "Hail" but it just isn't a good vibes song to get people dancing in the stands. Better for before the game or after the game after all the excitement has died down.

"Sweet Caroline" may not be the best choice, so perhaps there is another upbeat, fun song we can choose that won't irritate those that know or care what the Red Sox sing.

Too bad the Baja Men's song wasn't "Who Let the Bears Out?"

Hell no on sweet Caroline. Save that song for the Boston m*******s. Also, the 'I believe...we will win' chant is lame AF.

I agree. That was very cool when the whole stadium joined in. Lots of energy and enthusiasm. It was fun.

My reply was primarily for end of game. I'll disagree that "Hail" is not a good song for a victory, as it is the Cal Alma Mater, and it's a tradition at many schools (used to be at Cal as well) to sing the Alma Mater after the game.

But I'd be fine with something as a tradition during the game, especially if it replaced the "Bear Growl". Ohio State has their "Hang on Sloopy", the Huskies have "Tequila", and I can't recall what Wisconsin uses but it's a cool tradition as well. I think they all do those songs at the beginning of the 4th quarter. Let Cal Band come up with something and I think it could be a winner.

Palms of Victory is a great song, great lyrics, is very upbeat and easy to sing.

The male Red Sox fans I know, including comedian Bill Burr, ***despise*** the singing of Sweet Caroline. They view it as a total "sell out" move by the franchise, designed to appeal to female fans. One friend actually talks about the pre-Sweet Caroline days versus the post-Sweet Caroline days, with the only good thing about the post-Sweet Caroline days being that the Red Sox have won.

In Bill Burr's words, women tend to like it, and guys either hate it or sit there silently and cringe as their date sings it, knowing if they say something negative they'll ruin any chance they have of getting laid later.

I vote ***HELL NO*** to Sweet Caroline. Let's stick to our own traditions, please.

USC and Stanford both stole "All Right Now". How about stealing a song that nobody else steals like "California Dreaming" or "Say it's All Right"? (Say It's all right, It's all right, Have a good time 'cause it's all right") Another would be Kool and ghe Gang's "Celebrate good times, c'mon!" Celebrate would be a great song to rub it in.

Unfortunately Penn State football is also known for Sweet Caroline and that's obviously the worst possible organization you'd want to be associated with.

How about a California anthem of some sort:
California Dreamin
Goin back to Cali (Biggie or Cool J)
Anything from the Beach Boys
California Love
California Sun (the Rivieras)

Lots that aren't quite appropriate (Dead Kennedys, Eagles, Doors, Chili Peppers, Dre, Cal Drinking Song)
There's got to be a cross-generational, feel-good, stadium-friendly song someone can find.

Sweet Caroline is a big SEC tradition as well. I've yet to go to an SEC game where it wasnt played. Crowd response has always been big.

As an aside, I've long joked with my SEC/ACC friends that going to a Clemson game was like going to a wedding. The place is always packed at kickoff with zero late arriving students. About a half hour kickoff, the place morphs into what sounds like a DJ-led wedding reception and people love soaking that up. Lots of loud music that everyone knows from Earth Wind & Fire "September" to B-52s "Love Shack" plus more recent stuff and people love it. You've got lots of older folks and students dancing around at their seats...it's quite a scene. I'm not suggesting that this works in a place like Berkeley but I'm totally convinced that southerners gets to games earlier to shake their grove a little before the game starts. Plus, a few drinks or ten at the tailgate makes rhat a little easier.

Beach Boys - good vibrations. It's quintessential California, it's upbeat, "vibrations" gives us a play on the Hayward fault line through the stadium, and the song is a good one.

Apologies to all of you that love the song but when I was growing up, Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow were the height of uncool. You might get beat up if you had Sweet Caroline on your walkman.

For the life of me, their resurgence boggles my mind.

Someone please explain why white people love singing Sweet Caroline at games? My grad school used to do the same too at games, never got into it.

That actually sounds quite fun. Though I'll bet some people there would rather have the DJ play stuff that amps up the crowd and scares opponents, as opposed to stuff like "Love Shack" that gets the sorority crowd dancing,

So many local artist from the Bay Area - Santana, Green Day, Journey, the Dead, Smashmouth, Tower of Power, MC Hammer, Metallica, Sly and the Family Stone, and Counting Crows (Cal's own) to name just a few. Seems like there is a lot of stuff to use. I mean, Green day has a song titled "Tight Wad Hill' for christ sake. Seems like a lot of material which would be better than Sweet Caroline. Although I did like that everyone was singing, which is cool.

Jump Around took off at Wisky, so it seems like there could be something local that bring the crowd to life.

Ripping off SDSU, which does the song to start every 4th quarter.
