We were convinced the stuff oozed out of your pores the morning after a late night Flint's run.

The sauce wasn't the highlight. The smoker was. RIP

Pawlawski, Willard and I used to live on 66th at Shattuch (the definition of a shhh it hole....) ... I always found Flint's to be really overrated... and expensive for what you got. I'm a heretic.

Maybe you are too young. It was amazing in the 70s and 80s

Agreed Calumnus. A perfect night was a long night of beers at McNally's with a Flint's chaser. Woke up as bearister described above with the smell of the BBQ sauce everywhere. E&J is very good but definitely second fiddle.

Try heinz Kansas City bbq sauce. Verybgood, if you like sweet.

Heathen! Mass produced sauce from a jar is for weekend warriors and people with inferior taste buds. You wash that stuff down with Natty Light...

Now, I'd love to share my uncle's Kansas City sauce recipe with you, but then I would have to kill you (after letting you enjoy it's sweet and smoky awesomeness).

i was windsurfing down at Candlestick (next to what used to be the park) the other day and some random dude offered me some ribs. They were delicious. Other times, I've seen guys w/ a smoker on a trailer. The dudes have always been super friendly and have offered me, a total stranger, links and ribs. Yeah, it's a bit of a rough crowd down there, but people are pretty dang nice.

We just made and tried this recipe and it is very close to the Flint sauce I remember, although the original had more heat than we "applied". Brought back great memories. I'm still tasting it as I type this.

Doug's BBQ on San Pablo Avenue and 37th Street. Wonder if it is still open? BBQ goat was the bomb. Never go there at night though. Kept getting approached by the working ladies.

Brian Wethers dad made (and sold) some great BBQ sauces - very different from Flints, Dougs and E&J. It's been years since I bought some, though. I don't even know if he still makes and sells the sauces.

Doug's was my fallback barbecue place after Flint's closed. Unfortunately, Doug's is now closed as well.

I grew up on Doug's, I miss that place so much. I was at KC's new location the other day, their old location was our go to spot as students in the early 2010's. Glad there are still 2 black owned BBQ spots in Berkeley these days.

I've been to KC's new spot a couple of times, it's my son's favorite. Last time I think owner in there, really nice guy, hope they do well, I'm worried for them on the rent. Superior to E&J imo.

Give me a Chef Edwards throwback! Run down building but good pulled pork, got displaced along with the Sears lot for housing, went across street to San Pablo but went out of business.

FYI: a friend bought the recipe and tested it...it is NOT Flint's sauce.

There were rumors Flint's on San Pablo was reopening (new paint and sign) but that was a few years ago.

Another buddy mentioned Mr. Flintroy's son or relative was selling bottled sauce on facebook.

Doug's was great.

Owner is Patrick, a great dude.

Chef was the man, I always used to go in there with my pops.

I really miss The Brick Pig's House and the wonderful couple who owned it. Everyone got a free graduation meal.

On the topic of barbecue SAUCE, and since it's Memorial Day Weekend, official start of grilling season, I'll pass along a tip I tried just last night. I have a family barbecue sauce recipe that I make a batch of every year, but inevitably we run out and are reduced to using bottled barbecue sauce from the grocery store. I find these WAY TOO SWEET for my taste. Adding vinegar improves them, but it's still more of a sweet-sour taste - better, but not what I really want. I'd seen references to coffee in recipes so last night, using Kinders California Gold sauce, I started adding leftover coffee and tasting. Bingo! The bitterness of the coffee cut the sweetness and added a slight a roasty taste. Not as good as my (or your or Flint's, I assume) homemade recipe, but it makes the bottled stuff palatable (a little Tapatio also doesn't hurt). We'll be doing some ribs tonight.

Bo's BBQ in Lafayette had a good run, he had a fantastic beer selection to go with quality BBQ.

Bo's was great for gourmet quality: Niman Ranch beef, organic greens, wine, craft beers. The sauce was forgettable, but the smoked brisket with burnt ends was sublime and was better without sauce anyway.

I was spoiled by Flint's and Doug's and their BBQ sauce. I've been to great BBQ places around the country, especially in the South, and most keep the sauce on the side and take great pride in the way their meat is rubbed/cooked/smoked. I just can't appreciate that form of BBQ. I find myself judging a BBQ place primarily on their sauce. I know that probably makes me a BBQ doofus, but for me it's all about the sauce.
