Jeff Faraudo in Sports Illustrated has written "Cal Athletics: The Best Bears to Wear Every Uniform Number, From 0 Through 99."

Kinda fun. I think he did a solid job, especially since he had the courage to go pretty far back in time (to at least 1938). He doesn't specify how much weight he gave to success in the pros vs. success in college alone. It's hard to separate the two.

My only compliant is it seems he wanted to have a player at every number, and also a minimum number of candidates for each number (generally speaking). This results in some weak picks IMO (mainly in the #60-#99 range), as well as some guys mentioned like Monty Buckley, Max Zhang, and Pat Barnes, who frankly, don't belong on this list. No offense to those guys -- Buckley in particular was one of my favorite Cal players. I think it would have been more fun to have "No one worthy" at a few numbers, if them's the facts.

#7: Is Boller really the best #7 we've ever had?

#21: I think #21 might be our most impressive number of all time: Lamond Murray, Sean Lampley, Keenan Allen, Jeff Kent, etc...it's hard to top that list. Anyone have a number that beats #21?

#27: Ashtyn Davis is good, but it's hard to believe we haven't had anyone better at #27 in nearly 100 years.

#34: I think a strong argument could be made that Anderson belongs in front of Vereen.

#53 and #71: These guys need to prove themselves before showing up on this list. Maybe Faraudo was getting tired by this point.

#65, #68, #78, #85, #90, #93, #96, and #98: No offense to the guys listed, but surely we can do better. Faraudo had run out of gas at this point.

#94: Eff this guy.

Interesting exercise in the way it combines football, basketball and the other sports. Okay, so how did Faurado know all those numbers? did he sit there with a bunch of rosters from different eras? I applaud him for making this effort.

When you (C_I_G) said "Eff #94", I was trying to think who it was and my only response was, "I don't recall Brennan Scarlett being #94".

I did this, but only for Football in 2014. Any thoughts on changes taking into account the last 5-6 years? Obviously Jared Goff replaces Dave Barr at #16.

A few months ago I asked the question, is Jahvid Best the Golden Bear to wear #4 for the all-time team. The general consensus was that Russell White still had #4. There was then a thread to fill in the other numbers. I have made my list of the All-Numbers team of Golden Bears. I have limited my team to players I actually saw play. I was a freshman at Cal in '76. I started really paying attention to Cal football in '74 since it was looking likely I would go to Cal, hence I had Steve Bartkowski as #10 (although I don't recall many other players from '74). My older brother was a freshman in '75 so I went to many games in '75 and saw Chuck Muncie and Steve Rivera. So even though I did not enter Cal until '76 there are a few '74-'75 players.

1. DeSean Jackson. Also considered: Jameel Powell, Marvin Jones, Paul Joiner
2. Nnamdi Asomugha
3. Bobby Shaw. Could have also gone for Brian Treggs or Jim Breech.
4. Russell White. In a close one over Jahvid Best.
5. Sydquan Thompson. Replaced Richard Rodgers. Despite Rodgers role in "The Play", Sydquan was a fixture for four years
6. Geoff McArthur
7. Steve Rivera
8. Deltha O'Neal. Also considered: Aaron Rodgers
9. Mike Pawlawski. Also considered: Marquis Smith, C.J. Anderson
10. Steve Bartkowski. Also considered: Marshawn Lynch, Desmond Bishop, Matt Bouza, Doug Brien
11. Troy Taylor
12. Joe Roth
13. Daymeion Hughes. Also considered: Sekou Sanykia
14. Gale Gilbert. I know old-timers will say Craig Morton but I never saw him play
15. Chase Lyman. A tough one to find 15's. Could have gone with Vince Ferragamo but he was a little before my time; plus he transferred to Nebraska.
16. Dave Barr
17. Reggie Robertson. Not a lot to choose from for 17's. Also could have Gary Graumann. If you want to be a great back-up QB, wear #17. Chris Conte?
18. Pat Barnes. Should this be Mike Mohammed? Also considered: Adimchinobe Echemandu (yes, I had to look up how to spell that!), Chris Cannon
19. Rich Campbell
20. Justin Forsett. Also considered: Matt Giordano, Iheanyi Uwaezuoke, Isi Sofele
21. Keenan Allen. Replaced Lindsey Chapman. Also considered: Donnie McCleskey
22.Tim Mixon. Joe Kapp for the old-timers. How about Will Kapp?
23. Eric Zomalt. Also considered: Ryan Gutierrez, Josh Hill
24. Marshawn Lynch. I know he only wore #24 one year but he was wearing 24 for that run in the Big Game. Not a lot else to choose from here; Dante DePaola?
25. Chidi Iwoma. Also considered Mike McGrath, David Wilson
26. Kevin Moen. I know Ike Booth was probably a better player but the image of Moen is too iconic.
27. Ron Coccimiglio. Also considered Chris Manderino
28. Chris Richards. Also considered Greg Zomalt
29. Joe Igber. This was his number his freshman year.
30. JJ Arrington Or does JJ get replaced by Mychal Kendricks? Also considered: Steve Hendrickson
31. John Tuggle. Close over Brent Woodall
32. Michael Davis
33. Tom Newton. Also considered John McLaughlin
34. Shane Vareen. Replaced Reynard Rutherford
35. One of the holes on my list. How about Brian Shutte; was he 35?
36. Cornell Collier. I know for old-timers its Jackie Jensen.
37. Burl Toler (Sr.)
38. Greg Bracelin. Also considered: Marc Hicks
39. Markey Crane. Despite his fumble in the Big Game my freshman year
40. David Ortega. Also considered: Andy Jacobs
41. Another hole
42. Chuck Muncie
43. Dwight Garner
44. Tony Gonzalez. Tyson Alualu would have got the nod at many other numbers
45. Jerrott Willard. Also considered: Mick Luckhurst
46. Paul Jones
47. Hardy Nickerson. Tough choice over Rich Dixon
48. Brandon Whiting. Another tough one over Tim Lucas and Tully Banta-Cain
49. Ken Harvey. Three tough choices in a row, over Scott Fujita
50. Kirk Karacozoff
51. Alex Mack
52. Troy Auzenne. Close one over Brandon Mebane
53. Mike Gibson
54. Marvin Philip. Over Duane Clemons

68. Brad Jackman. Also considered: Greg Peters
69. Matt Malele
70. Daryle Skaugstad
71. Andrew Cameron
72. Chidi Ahanatou. Maybe replace with Mitchell Schwartz?
73. Harvey Salem. Lots of choice here. Doug Reisenberg, Brian Thure, John Romero
74. Nolan Bluntzer. Could find little to choose from here. Lots of choice at 73 & 75.
75. Todd Steussie. Lots of choice: Dave Zawatson, Erik Robertson
76. Lorenzo Alexander
77. Tarek Glen. Also considered: Majett Whiteside
78. Keith Kartz. Also considered: Pat Graham
79. Ted Albrecht
80. Ron Rivera. Also considered: Jeff Barnes
81. Dameane Douglas
82. Mike Caldwell. Tom Swoboda Almost replaced with Craig Stevens
83. George Freitas
84. Another hole
85. Vinny Strang Also considered: James Devers
86. Sean Dawkins
87. Chris Carpenter. Also considered Brian Surgener
88. Phil Heck. Also considered Garrett Cross
89. Nick Harris
90. Reggie Camp. Also considered Ryan Riddle
91. Regan Upshaw

I like the list. Here are some notable favs of mine in BOLD. It's not that I'm saying the SI list is wrong, but I only included the 'modern era'. lFan777I I had heard of Wesley Walker but never knew he was a Cal player. Those Mike White teams were loaded.

Walker was exactly what Cal could use now - a receiver who could lengthen the field with his speed. He had sprinters speed and I can still see him burning the secondary with long passes. All the more remarkable as he could only see out of one eye, hence no depth perception. It's been 45 years since he played here and I would not put any receiver since over him in the long passing game.

There were three names I expected to see and didn't so a quick google search revealed:
74 - Sherman White - All-American defensive lineman who was the #2 pick in the draft
70 - Ed White - All-American defensive lineman who switched to guard in the NFL
?? - Jeff "Bad News" Barnes - Cal linebacker in mid-70s. I couldn't find a Cal number but he was 56 for the Raiders.

Great point Larno, Walker averaged almost 26 yards per reception in his Cal career - that's beyond incredible. He also had a TD every four times he caught the ball.

Sean Dawkins is right behind Walker as a big-play WR. He also caught a TD every four times he had a reception and is the all-time TD leader with 30 (in three seasons) for the Bears. He averaged nearly 17 yards per catch which trails on Walker among Cal's all-time reception leaders.

Walker was the best deep throat, EDIT deep threat (!) I've ever seen, and he continued his prowess in the pros!

I used to see Walker regularly in Berkeley the year after he graduated. My frat was right next to the apartment where many football players lived and he would come visit driving his new Mercedes. Hope he has done well in his post football life!

I was in high school when Dave Penhall (#15 thanks, Google) was Cal's QB in 1970. It seemed like he was a better athlete than passer, but Cal ran a veer offense that played to his strengths and they were a lot of fun to watch. Cal beat USC and in the Big Game, beat a Rose Bowl-bound Stanford team led by Jim Plunkett and there was no doubt who was the better QB that day.

Bartkowski has been mentioned, but he had an ungodly strong arm. In 1973 against Oregon St, he and Ferragamo were splitting time. It was a drizzly day and he threw one pass that must have slipped out of his hands because it was the classic wounded duck - and still went 40 or 50 yards for a TD.

Here's the complete list:

2. Nnamdi Asomugha
3. Bobby Shaw. Could have also gone for Brian Treggs or Jim Breech.

FWIW I think Waasdorp was underappreciated because he played with Carter all those years, and we missed him as much as we missed Andre in 2001

Does anybody know what number Proverb Jacobs wore? He was an offensive lineman 1956-57 and went on to play in the NFL/AFL for several years. As a player, he was before my time, but was my 7th grade PE teacher in 1967 at Garfield Jr High in Berkeley. A very impressive guy to a 12-year-old.
