According to an article in Snapp Chats in the summer 2020 Edition of the California Magazine of the California Alumni Association, Pappy's Boys, the organization of Pappy Waldorf's former Cal football players, will formally dissolve at a farewell banquet in Berkeley on Sept 4, the night before the TCU game.

Thanks go out to Pappy, his family, and all who came to Cal and played for him.

Melancholy confirmation that nothing lasts forever. Those still with us would be 90 or older with a possible few in their late 80s. Even the ranks of those old enough to remember the era well are thinning rapidly. RIP!

Yes, I am well aware of that proverb. Hence, my more prudent approach to life today. No more going out in the wee small hours of the morning in the parts of town Richard Blaine warned the Nazis about in "Casablanca". Just wearin' my mask and avoiding big crowds.....

One of Pappy's Boys used to sit behind us in the old stadium configuration, and we heard lots of stories from him over the years. We even got to eat with them at a restaurant in Fresno before the infamous game there and rode to the stadium and back in their chartered bus. He has been gone for a number of years now. Over the last few years I have run into Paul Larson several times and have had nice chats about Cal.

Not trying to rush anyone, just considering the the reality of mortality rates.

If there is a Supreme Being, the entity must have one heck of a sense of humor to have come up with the idea of creating sentient beings. On earth, humankind has to be the biggest joke on the planet.....

I don't know, but there are still at least several left. Quoting former quarterback Jim Marinos '51, vice-chairman of the group from the California magazine, "As each year goes by, we lose more members. We can't ignore the fact that we are approaching the end of our lives, and we don't want to leave Pappy's Boys floating in the ocean without a skipper."

Since they were formed as a group in 1987, "Pappy's Boys have placed a statue of Pappy kneeling in Faculty Glade, the grizzly bear statue at the NW entrance to Memorial Stadium, and the Waldorf Bench on the stadium's west side, and have supported the football program by awarding a full-year scholarship to a member of each year's team, including Todd Steussie, Deltha O'Neill, Kyle Boller, and Jared Goff. They are currently passing the hat to put the scholarship fund on a permanent footing."

Former Chronicle Columnist Ron Fimrite and 1949 Cal Rose Bowl QB Dick Erickson wrote a book about Pappy;s Boys, which is a good read for any Cal football fan:

Speaking of playing for Pappy.........

Excerpt from Cal Band Oral History Project, Interview with Huntley Johnson, French Horn 1943, Three Rose Bowls

Cheatham: What are your memories of Pappy Waldorf's first several years as coach of the Cal teams?

Johnson: The day Coach Waldorf arrived at the Southern Pacific train station at the foot of University Avenue, members of the Cal Band...me, Bud Barlow, Phil Elwood, Herb Towler...greeted him as he got off the train12 with his associates. (Bob Tessier, and others.) [...as well as a large contingent of the rooting section.]We really enjoyed the arrival of Pappy Waldorf, who told the Cal Band it was as necessary for us to be at the football games as the football team was. I remember [when the Band] had "Smokers" 13 at the end of each summer. Pappy Waldorf was invited. He would come and talk and he established a strong rapport with the Band14. The "Smokers" were held at the AKL house on the north side of campus. It was a time for old friends to get together for the first time since the end of classes in June. They swapped stories about their summer adventures and got in the mood for the upcoming football season and academic year.

Footnotes:
12 The Straw Hat Bad had yet come into existence
13 A "Smoker" was an all male social gathering with a beer keg and enthusiasm. They got their name during the 1930's when the tobacco companies would hold these gatherings and distribute free packages of cigarettes.
14 There has never since been as close a friendship with a football coach as we had with Pappy. It was strong and it was special. NHC (Dan Cheatham, Cal Band Historian)

Go Bears!
Cal Band Great!!
