Good article.
The Cougs were "WSc" in 1929. On September 1, 1959, the WA legislature passed a bill to officially change the name to
Washington State University . . . aka "WSu".
Who was the last "WSc" QB in 1958? It was All-Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) QB Bob Newman from El Cerrito HS who led the NCaa major colleges (1957) in total offense and ranked second* in passing yards. He was drafted by the SF 49ers, but didn't make the team. He then signed with the Oaktown Raiders of the old AFL.

*Well then, which NCaa QB was ranked first in passing yards and completion % in 1958? It was Iowa A-A QB Randy Duncan who led Coach Forest Evashevski's Hawkeyes to a win in the 1959 Rose Bowl. We remember that game and the name.
__
WSc QB Herbert "Butch" Meeker was 5'-3" tall.
Meeker and Dills at WScC Gene Dils (pictured) was his 6'-5" center.
The rest is history.
