Here is some video from last week of Bishop O'Dowd and incoming Cal guard Marsalis Roberson against Mitty. Was curious if Roberson made a jump in his play in the last year. He scored 9 points and looked sort of the same. Jumps out of the gym, weird looking shot, needs to improve his ball handling. He certainly has potential but I don't think it is realistic to expect much early.

(I found a newer video from a game against Salesian where he has better results but looks the same.)

The star of the game was Mitty's Nigel Burris. He is really good, better than any of Cal's incoming players. It turns out that he has reclassified from 21 to 22 to get more interest, best offer is from UCSB. Another site says he is interested in Stanford and SC. Does not mention Cal. Of course he doesn't.

Assuming Celestine starts we need 2 players to be deserving of starting/major minutes at the 2-3 from the following:
1. Roberson
2. Bowser
3. Anyanwu
4. Alajiki
5. Foreman
6. Hyder
7. Klonaras
8. Kuany
9. Welle
10. Player to be named later

Just 2 players need to show themselves to be better than the rest. In particular we need 3 point shooting as we were already a poor 3 point shooting team and just lost our #1 and #2 players in attempts and almost half our made threes.

Foreman started half our games, mostly at the 2, so it is a good guess Fox has him penciled in. He is small and did not shoot that well from three (.317) but has shot better in the past albeit against weaker competition. Otherwise Foreman gets most of his minutes at PG.

Roberson seems like a good bet, maybe even to start alongside Celestine, if he can shoot well enough. Most of his highlights are dunks, but he does often bring the ball up court for BOD, has a good handle and is a good passer and a good defender with good length.

I haven't seen any evidence Kuany or Welle are ready to play major minutes on the perimeter.

I haven't seen much evidence anyone is ready other than Celestine, but I included all the candidates even if they are long shots.

Starting 5:
Brown
Celestine
GA
Kuany
Kelly

The freshman most ready to play is Anyanwu. One could imagine Roberson as a slasher with his great athleticism. The defense would back off allowing him to get off his unorthodox shot. A little like Ty Wallace. But he is not there yet from what I have seen. He is not the guy you want as a catch-and-shoot wing.

I started a thread with video from a full game from this season a few weeks. His play was not what I expected from his previous highlight videos. He looks to be the biggest project of the three.

So Anywanyu is fully recovered from the car crash/collapsed lung etc? He sounds promising but a bit like another Thorpe.

I was thinking the same lineup as you if Kuany can make a decent percentage from three and we consider playing zone. However, I think Fox is far more likely to play Foreman and/or Hyder. After all that is who he played this year (behind Betley and Bradley).

Foreman and Hyder were 6th and 7th in minutes per game right behind Kelly, ie they are 4th and 5th among returners. Fox played them as wings backing up Bradley and Betley (as well as Brown at PG). Kuany was 10th and played behind GA at the 4. It would be cool to have him at the 3 if he can shoot, but I don't think Fox would do it.

I don't know if Anyanwu is recovered. There is literally no news on him. I have tried. I did find a tweet that he is averaging 11 point and 9 rebounds a game so far. His team is 7-0. He is not like Thorpe. He is thin and fairly athletic and has a good midrange game. Think Tremaine Fowlkes, but not as explosive. He plays close to the basket in high school but will probably be more on the perimeter in college because he is undersized. He needs to add a three point shot, which is possible given his good midrange and shooting technique. He might be adequate next year, assuming he is like he was before the accident, and he is the best of the three. People are delusional about Cal's recruits.

I have to hope for Kuany because he has the most potential. But I think he should be closer to the basket and not shooting 3s and GA should be farther from the basket and shooting as much as possible. So I think Kuany should be the 4 and GA the 3, except that basketball is now positionless.

Cal needs to recruit more shooters, among many other things. Fox has recruited for athleticism. He will have to coach them up.

Ok, yeah I agree with most of that. Last year I was arguing Kuany should play more, he had our best stats per minute and looked good, though over few minutes. This year he played about the same amount and was not as good statistically.

I just looked at more videos of Anywanyu, and he does seem to have a decent midrange jumper. Tremaine Folwkes (Cal and NBA small forward) seems like a stretch, Anywanyu plays with his back to the basket a lot in HS, but I like the possibility and sure hope he is healthy.

Big issue with KK and GA starting at 3 and 4 is that neither of them can guard wings IMO. Maybe KK will eventually be able to. Teams can be positionless in their scheme, but you've got to have the skilled, tough, high BB IQ players to do that.

My philosophy is that you play the players that make sense offensively and you play zone against teams where you do not match up. I do think KK will be able to guard almost anyone soon, and GA is a good scorer on a team with only one other. But there are no alternatives after the Bradley transfer. Would like a transfer in who can start but Fox.

Exactly my philosophy.

In Braun's last year he tried many different lineups but never the one I wanted: Hardin, Anderson, Boykin, Christopher, Randle. And yes, play zone. Let Anderson shoot (.410) from three. I guarantee we would not have finished second to last with that lineup. Coming off the bench Kamp, Wilkes, Viernrsal, Knezevic or Robinson? That was a great team, even missing Theo.

Instead Braun played Knezevic and Randle together, or Viernesal at PF, or Anderson at C and Boykin at PF with Hardin on the bench... or Knezevic starting with Randle on the bench....finishing 9th in the PAC-10 and getting fired.

The next year Monty took the same team less Anderson and Hardin, added Gutierrez and went 22-11 finished third and got a #7 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Issue there is, most teams don't play consistently good zone defense. Syracuse has been renowned for their zone, but they recruit tall, long athletic wings that can close out effectively on perimeter shooters (main reason their zone is consistently good is because they defend the 3 well).

Anyhow, I'm for lineups like the one you mentioned for spurts in a game when there's foul trouble or players out, but my preference is to have a lineup that balances the best possible outcomes on both ends of the court.

Starting 5:
Brown
Celestine
GA
Kuany
Kelly

Sometimes there are no great choices. I would like to plug in Scottie Pippen at the 3. Good offensive player and an all timer on D. Handles the ball well too. Unfortunately, he is old and has no eligibility. The other choices on the actual roster are below pac12 level IMO. I want the best 5 players on the floor.

Agreed. We were #309 in scoring last year and have lost the two guys that took the most shots and did most of our scoring, especially from the wing. It is imperative that we get our best scorers on the floor.
Besides, I think the lineup you suggest lends itself to a 3-2 zone with Brown, Celestine and Kuany out front, defending the three, and Kelly and GA down low, defending the basket. You can occasionally switch up to a 2-2-1 with Brown and Celestine applying pressure.

Foreman, Thorpe, Bowser and the freshmen all would fit in. It would be an especially good use of Lars. When you have an athletic lineup you could switch up to man.

Many teams don't play good zone because they dont practice it, but elementary school kids get it. It isn't rocket science, it is pretty intuitive. Much easier to learn than offensive set plays, IMO.
