Another very annoying thing with Fox and company is the complete lack of transparency within the program.

Under previous regimes, we had weekly interviews with players and coaches. There was media times every Tuesday.

Now we barely gain any insight.

The disclosures about player injuries and availability are pathetic. Yes, I'm a physician, and I understand HIPPA. This is more than that.

Often we only find out the players are unavailable when they walk out for the opening tip. We don't hear if they have surgery, or any specific timetable for their return. This is over the top and further alienates fans who want to follow the team on a day by day basis.

Then recruiting. I have never seen any P5 team in hoops or football which is more secretive about recruiting. Football gives us lots of hints about what they're doing, and they are much more open with BI and other sites. This piques the interest of fans, and can even help secure recruits by creating some excitement. It's not like we have 5* verbals or anything.

Basketball, we often first hear of recruits on signing day.

Then this year, no final press conference, no word from the AD nothing. Are we still recruiting for next year? Who the heck knows.
What's the plan? Make some changes or just doing the same thing over and over?

While I agree with all of your points (including the HIPAA stuff) - my sense is that the injury status is not FOX (or Wilcox), but coming down from above as a CYA position of the University.

But the rest of it - yeah - absolutely NO sense of responsibility to any of their constituencies about engagement.

Funny this is that the interns they have in the AD office have done a pretty damm decent job on social media this year. Instagram feed, for example, has been consistently active with good content. Need more "call to action" but it isn't bad and compared to prior years....eeeck!!

But Fox is horrible - EXCEPT FOR MARK FOX. The Media has bought the narrative "you can't win here" and thus his failures have driven down expectations to a ridiculously low level.

Oh well - at least next year is the last year....no way he lasts to 5.

I know that my zeal for recruiting info died with Fox. Insider info on recruiting was why I joined BI initially, and now, I come here to complain about Fox instead of see who we are scheduling home visits with. It's a shame.

I'm less concerned about the injury/availability stuff, as it seems like football is also pretty tight-lipped about those things, so it might be a university-wide policy.

However, everything else here is on point. I would go even further to say that it sure looks like Mark Fox views the fans as at best a nuisance and at worst something the program should be shielded from and completely unaccountable to. In a college setting, where nominally the team is part of the university, and the "fans" are often students and alums who have a vested interest in the program, that is so wrong that it too should be a fireable offense. But again, that extension is coming!

Exactly, partly shame, he knows he is getting away with highway robbery, partly being an misanthrop. He has always been pissy, but he has become increasingly testy in interviews. He clearly is not going to do more than he can. Other than excuses, he has no answers.

I would want to hear more if there was something positive to say. There is no hope, there is no plan, we just did need to wait this out.

On the recruiting note, who are we looking at for the '23 class? Have heard nothing, and couldn't find any information except looking at 247's list of offers we've made, and almost none of those guys have even mentioned Cal. Looking at the BI archives, it seems like there were some articles last year around this time for the '22 class (which we missed badly on our top prospects). Any chance a similar overview could be published soon?

That's the thing. We don't know who is being recruited until it's announced that they have signed. Fox never says anything.

A site called Verbal Commits lists players being recruited or having interest (for all schools, not just California). I don't know where they get their info but they do provide a list of recruits and notifications when players remove the school from consideration or sign elsewhere. For the 2023-24 class the list has been short and the higher-rated players have dropped off. I don't know if this is a competing site so I'm not posting a link.

Since Fox took over, verbal commits has been intensely inaccurate.

Well, they have very short lists of 2023-24 and 2024-25 prospects interested in Cal. I have no inside info but based on our recent classes I'd say that's plausible.

Coaching staff is not allowed to discuss recruits until LOI Day.

Exactly. The recruits are allowed to talk about Cal, but no one is.

True. I misspoke there. But the point remains that you hear next to nothing about recruiting because Fox is an awful recruiter.

Exactly, there is no noise out there among top recruits because we are not on their radar. Mahaney was probably the last recruit we could follow.

Yeah.

But every other program and or recruits leak info. Just checkout our FB recruiting. We know who' s interested, who's been offered and the verbals.

Most schools basketball program rolls the same way. Not ours.

The lack info could also be that this staff just isn't out there recruiting much. Maybe attending a few obligatory events here and there and searching the internet, but not regularly attending AAU or HS games and mingling with coaches. Would explain the results.

Yep. I know previous staffs used to assign one of the coaches to meet regularly with the recruiting sites to talk about targets and plans. That doesn't happen with Fox.

If he actually won any meaningful games he'd start being more open to the press. Being a bottom feeder I'm surprised the press even wants to speak to him.
