At what point does Jeff Knowleton act?

Honestly this is now at the point of farce. NO ONE can seriously believe that Fox is coming back next year. Season tixs, meager as they are, would dry up, no recruit will come and it would simply be a delay of another year until the inevitable firing.

Yes, the optics of doing it during FINALS WEEK while the grad students are on strike sucks balls. It really does. But you can not have a coach, playing with 8 scholarship players, SCREAM at the players in an empty gym.

I acknowlege the situation sucks. An interim will be unable to recruit (are we even doing anything?). Everyone knows THEY will be a dead man walking because after Jones NO WAY an assistant is being elevated and especially on a squad that is O fer the season.

But it is in the interests of the students. If Christ and Knowleton really DO place student success and well being first <*cough - look at swim> Fox needs to be fired ASAP.

Personally, I believe Knowlton doesn't see anything wrong here. The narrative that injuries have completely derailed the season is being spread far and wide. It's in every write-up, on every broadcast, in every press conference. With players healthy and contributing next year along with a key recruit, he deserves another year to show you what he's built. Not to mention the buyout and poor optics around that given the issues you mentioned. I will be more surprised if he is fired before next year.

Do I agree with that? Absolutely not. However, this is Cal and they suck at this.

The problem here is at the strategic level.

Yes. Injuries suck. But it is also his approach. He has failed (either from lack of effort or inability to offer a compelling pitch) to recruit the scorers he NEEDS to have. This idea of using most scholarships on unskilled 6 7 wings to play defense and then one guy to play hero ball on offernse is SO 1990s. And this performance is completely predictable once the injury gods hit our guards because he has woefully underrecruited at the point and flex position. Thus you have Brown going 40 last night.

And I would point out - the preseason projections from sportswriters who were looking at a nearly fully roster had us picked for 10th. That is our talent level.

Absolutely. Those of us paying attention with an honest and fair perspective saw this disaster coming. Poor recruiting, constantly recruiting non-shooters, poor offensive scheme, recruiting players with a history of injuries. By the way, someone seriously needs to look into his program given the injury issues. Who is in charge of S&C and rehab? What is his practice regime doing to mitigate this? The entire operation top to bottom seems so poorly run.

Knowlton will just keep renewing both Fox and Wilcox until his own extension runs out. That way, no heavy lifting. Just pick up his own paychecks until the money runs out, or until the next Chancellor finally buys him out.

I think Knowlton is going to get fired once that McKeever report gets finalized - March maybe? They'll hold onto Fox until the new AD comes in. With the Snyder/NFL report out today, I think Cal is getting the clear message that you can't just ignore the problem.

Well this is where we were one year ago. Discussing if it makes sense to replace Fox before conference play, sensing that he would be replaced at year end. All the evidence was there and maybe there was a glimmer of hope along the lines of "wait until the season is over so the coaching candidates are available" Then the season ended and zilch.

So yeah - it been at the point of farce for a year. Not much different now than a year ago (other than we're actually worse). I have absolutely zero confidence that JK will do anything after the season is over. I also don't believe he is spending any time or effort narrowing a list.

So we will need to await a new AD. The good news is once you go zero-fer you can't be much worse.

There is a logic of not makign a change last year. I don't agree with it but I can understand. (not the extension but not firing). It has been a screwy period of time and arguably you just dont have the body of work to fully see if the plan is a bad one.

Now we know. He needs to go.

We are winless despite playing some pretty bad teams.

The team has heart as they showed against Arizona.

You can't fire the players so you HAVE to fire the coach.

Losing at home to Eastern Washington for your 10th loss in a row gets you fired. Period.

But Knowlton DID give him an extension last year. The year before Fox lost a record 17 PAC-12 games and our best player transfered. Then we had another horrible year last year and again our best player transfered. "Now" we know? It takes 0-10 against the weakest OOC schedule we have ever had to convince you? Well at least it is almost unanimous now.

If the Bears go winless, it will be a 0-32 record. The one-and-done in the Pac-12 tournament will count, so 0-11 in OOC games, 0-20 in the conference season, and 0-1 in the conference tourney yields 0-32.

The biggest stumbling block to 0-32 will be UT Arlington on December 21. The Bears will almost surely be favored. The Bears would almost surely have defeated EWU if Askew hadn't been in COVID protocols, the fates smiled upon Fox in his effort to go winless, and the fates may need to somehow smile again in order to get a defeat against UTA. There will be 21 additional games in which the Bears will be the underdog and need to avoid an upset, the Butler and Santa Clara OOC games, 18 regular conference games, and 1 conference tourney game, and the fates kind of need to smile on Fox in his effort to go winless if he's going to avoid an upset in all 21 games, he definitely needs the opponents to avoid having an off night on the same night the Bears are on.

That's a big challenge for Fox to get immortalized like that. He may need to settle for worst major conference season ever, or maybe he'll even "fall" to merely the worst Cal season ever. But it seems highly unlikely that Knowlton will choose to get rid of Fox before the season is over, so Fox will most likely get his shot, even if his chance for winless may be over by December 21.

Don't count out the two headwinds that only impact Cal - COVID and injuries! Considering how slow we play, other teams will need to have a record low scoring % for us to even sniff an upset.

Does anyone know if Askew & Okafor got covid or if it was precautionary? Because I get the sense that Fox is exacerbating any injury/ailment to prevent a player from playing in order to save his own ass. Like remember when Marsalis was in a boot then played the next game? Or Clayton still not playing but I recall him saying he was eligible to practice weeks ago.

He doesn't want his full squad healthy because even he knows the results will be the same.

That might be good, in a way. Threaten to fire him "for cause", then settle for half of what's left in his contract as a buyout, avoiding the messy and costly proceedings.
