I have been a proponent of this for years and even suggested it for Cal in a recent thread.

If nothing else works, put an off the rails schizoid plan into play. In Bears case they might only make 15 of 111 treys (which would cover their scoring average) but at least they would be trying to pull out of the death spiral.

The equivalent in football would be to throw deep every play. Think of all the PI calls alone.

That's the all-pass-interference offense!

The only exception being the Raiders. Carr would toss 46 INT and 30 of them would be pic 6's. Goff, on the other hand, would have 20 TDs.

Cal wouldn't get 111 shots up.

And the one shot we make, the player would have his foot on the line.

How about running the offense Paul Westhead ran at Loyola Marymount? On defense one player would be released when a shot went up to take a long pass after a miss or make. They aimed to put up a shot on every possession within seven seconds. I believe they broke NCAA scoring records. That would be a departure from the Mark Fox offense.

" Westhead's teams led Division I in scoring in 1988 (110.3 points per game), 1989 (112.5), and 1990 (122.4).[4] LMU's 122.4 point per game in 1990 was still a record as of 2020.[5] As of April 2012, Loyola Marymount held the five highest combined score games in Division I history. Four of the five occurred during Westhead's career, including a record 331 in the 181150 win over United States International University on January 31, 1989.

…Gathers led the NCAA in scoring and rebounding (32.7 ppg, 13.7 rpg) in 1989 and Kimble led the NCAA in scoring in 1990 (35.3 ppg)." Wikipedia on Paul Westhead

*I always watched their games when possible. Totally nuts.

Our players are not really set up for that (But god that was a fun team to watch). They had some key components in Gathers and Kimble that Cal doesn't have anyone close to. Similar to Wyking trying to press full court with the wrong crew.

I think the strength of our players (as a group) is that we have some length, better than average defensive intensity and a lot of heart. Our weaknesses are shooting, depth and offensive design (which causes our players to avoid transition baskets and hesitate in the half court - probably thinking too much).

With this group, I would run an offense that involves much more cutting, passing and constant movement to get layups (from back cuts, pick/roll) and mid-range jumpers. If we add some perimeter shooting, that opens up the middle and makes the cutting and passing more effective (but not sure we have that). I would NOT focus on slowing the game and limiting possessions as FOX seems to be doing. An offense scoring in the 70s would be fine for this teams defensive capabilities and give Cal at least a chance to win a few upsets. They can't win games in the 50s or the 90s

I actually saw two back cuts and both resulted in easy baskets two games ago. surprised me
