Don't need the chancellor doesn't want to win crap.

What I mean is if you were planning on firing him, why not now? More time to find a replacement.

This can not be helping the newvtv deal if the networks think Cal doesn't want to win. No one will watch a team only playing to get the tv money.

The pac 12 commissioner cant be happy and should be talking to Knowlton about holding up our part of being in the conference or we should be kicked out.I wonder if they have had the conversation?

I wrote to the Pac 12 office advising them that Cal basketball is not going to be easy to sell to new sponsors if there is no intention of winning.

Because Knowlton is incompetent.

Keeping Fox on until the end of the season and delaying the inevitable is not good for anyone including Fox, but mostly it is horrible for the players and fans. It is just torture. Fox should be "relieved of his responsibilities" immediately and Andrew Francis should be made the interim coach. That would at least remove the sword of Damocles hanging over the program. It would be a breath of fresh air and give the press someone new to talk to. Frankly this should have happened a month ago.

It could be that Knowlton and/or Chancellor Christ are waiting to see what happens with with the Conference. With UCLA and USC leaving, Oregon, Washington, and Arizona may soon follow, and the overbearing need to change coaches at Cal may no longer be as pressing or critical, as the Conference would not be one of the Power conferences any longer.

Let's remember, we LOST to teams that were not in power conferences, including UC Davis and UC San Diego as well as Texas State, Southern, Santa Clara, and Eastern Washington. I would not be surprised if a half dozen or so high schools in this state could beat us.
Fire Knowlton!

Simple answer - he's an idiot.

Complex answer - Carol hates revenue sports for whatever reason.

Because Cal isn't technically eliminated from the NCAA tournament.

Only four Pac-12 tournament wins away from history and Knowlton issuing a statement that "Mark Fox has figured it out".

A serious answer rather than snark and Christ bashing: maybe something to do with contract buy out terms. . .

I'm guessing that they want to do postseason player interviews to get them at part of the hiring process and buying in to program changes. They may want to find out what coach should stay for transition purposes, etc. Probably not, but I could see a real P5 AD doing that in certain situations..

If anything it is really the opposite. The payout is 100% of the "current" contract year and declining amounts of future years. The new contract year begins (appropriately) April 1, so Knowlton needs to fire him before then, otherwise we are on the hook for all of 2023-24 and more of 2025-25.

However, that can be after our last game. There is no contractural benefit or penalty to firing him sooner. The benefit is for the mental health of the players, fans, program, probably even Fox.
