He and his parents (with help from an uncle Bozeman reported to the NCAA the year before) took down Bozeman and the Cal basketball program just so he could transfer without losing a year of eligibility (as per the rules at the time).

Nothing to collect, TV show pays the plaintiff, and any remaining funds out of the $5000 pool are split between the plaintiff and defendant. So Gardner probably walked out with a little under 1k.
I heard he refused the check and requested cash in a paper bag instead
