I was curious what Jovani Ruff brings to the table, so I watched a full game that he played, which I have linked below.

Short Review: I was stunned at how good he is. His ranking of 41 is way too low. I know it was only one game, and he can't be that good every game, but his skill level is very high.

Longer Review: I had seen his highlight videos. I knew he was smooth and a pretty good athlete. But watching a whole game gave me a much greater appreciation.
1. He handles the ball really well. He was not the lead ball handler until the game got tight. But for a high school wing his handle exceeded my expectation. He has a good left hand and crosses over well.
2. The look of his shot hurts my eyes, but it goes in. By my count he was 9 for 9 from the free throw line. I think he was 2 for 4 on outside shots. I am not sure his shot needs to be reworked.
3. He finishes well with both hands. His left hand is way above average. He has spins and fade aways and a whole bunch in his bag.
4. When the game got tight, he took over. He seems to have a great mentality.
5. He is the ultimate Madsen downhill player. He would catch the ball and figure out a way to get to the basket whether the defense liked it or not. He probably scored over 30 points in the game.
6. His defense was indifferent. He is probably a good defender when he wants to be, but he saved himself for offense. I don't know about his passing because he did not pass much, but that is what his team needed.
7. The one thing that would improve his game is getting stronger. Some of his finishes were not great because he lacked the needed strength. This will be fixed.
8. He does not remind me of anyone exactly. He plays a little like a Ball brother, but he is not so much on the ball. His inside game is a little like Allen Crabbe when Crabbe was a junior at Cal.

Thanks for the full game video Sluggo.

Agree he has a better handle than I first thought. In the extended highlight video I saw he was too loose with the ball when he drove (the ball was outside his body too far and he had an awkward body position. In the Pac12 the ball would have been stolen.

You can still see that at times, but perhaps the video I saw was when he was younger and he's improved since.

I didn't see him pass once and still doesn't look like a PG to me.

His shot mechanics remind me of melo ball, but as you say it goes in.

But the thing that stood out to me was his explosiveness. I think this separates him from most players and what helped him earn his high ranking

Yes to explosive. Does not sky but jumps quickly. But also has a great left hand, lots of moves, and seems like a very smart player. It is a lot of things.

sluggo, do you have a sense for how good the other team was in this game? Perhaps more importantly, did they have a wing defender that matched up even halfway okay with Ruff, in terms of size and athleticism?

It was a high level game with good athletes on both sides. Maybe someone who follows recruiting more closely can say more.

Lakewood was 20-9 and 10-2 in conference in Long Beach Poly's league. They're good.

He really knows how to get to the line. Not afraid of contact, loves to slash and as stated above took over more ball handling duties in 2nd half and that made a big difference. Exciting game to watch.
