Cal creates hoops practice facility at expense of general student population

I wish Cal could accommodate the intercollegiate athletics program without compromising recreational space for the general student body. Since I was a student at Cal, intercollegiate athletics has taken over much of the recreational space (e.g., Underhill Field, Maxwell Field) at the expense of the general student body. Now this:

Not that every student wants to work out at the same time, but if they did then 2.5 square feet wouldn't be enough space even to stand without touching the students around you. Might be a good idea to look for space off campus but close by. Maybe turn a parking lot into a gym.

With sand volleyball in their new home would it be possible to use the old sand courts at Clark Kerr?

Everything is a tradeoff. Cal being one of if not the only P4 school without a dedicated practice facility for Men's & Women's basketball is criminal.

Two things can be true at once, the basketball teams should be given the long overdue dedicated facility, and there should simultaneously be an attempt to locate and build additional space for the general student population.

Giving priority to Intercollegiate Athletics is expressly forbidden according to the terms of use when, in 1981, students voted to fund construction of RSF with student fees. This move to take away recreational space should result in a lawsuit.

my understanding is Cal Athletics paid for the Blue Room, and most or all of the payments were from a few big donors.

I've been a semi-regular user of the Blue & Gold gyms for years, and my observations is at least one of those gyms were lightly used most of the day.

Also, Cal athletics expanded their fitness facilities to some rented space on Oxford just below the campus, and added nice workout spaces in the recently built new dorms (and will continue to do so for future new dorms), plus gave students access to some of the fitness facilities in Memorial Stadium that they didn't have at the time the RSF was built.

Yes, Cal Athletics/Donors paid "bought" one of the two 3rd floor rooms for a dedicated basketball facility for MBB and WBB, but expanded fitness space in other places on and around campus.

Cal is evolving like the rest of the world for the overall good of the University and the students, and I think kept the original deal with the students from the original funding of the RSF.

I still think a practice court on the roof of RSF (with great views) the roof of the garage or adjacent to RSF, could be done relatively on the cheap.

I posted some photos of the roof of the RSF when you made that comment before

There looks to be the physical space for it, but having been involved in several construction projects it's all about engineering so without conducting a study we can't say

Of course. The key would be a very light weight enclosure, with walls of Lexan or other light, clear, unbreakable material to open up the views. The existing roof would teally only need to support the weight of the players. These are added to rooftops elsewhere.

It would have the "coolness" factor other dedicated courts cant maych but could utilize the existing lockers, bathrooms, security, vending machines etc of RSF to reduce expenses.

Nothing is that simple in construction of that size when the original building was not designed for it, but perhaps a smaller structure could be built like a players lounge
