Half time

Cal 36

They hit 9 threes on 50% shooting, and 50% shooting from field

They beat us in every stat except turnovers

Dort not playing so seems Sammie getting most of minutes at center (12 pts, 6 rebounds)

Nojus with 9

Yeanay and Manyiel Dut are the only Bears with more than 2 rebounds. Ross has 5 assists, Carr 3.

OSU has 11 threes from 7 players and 22 assists from 7 players. And is killng us on the boards.

Is Dort hurt, or just sitting out the exhibition game for rest?

Dunno. Daubaris didn't play either.

Losing to the 98th ranked KenPom by 13 is "not that bad"? If the "without Dort" part means Cal has to depend on him for every win, we're in real trouble (I do not think he will last to play full minutes and every game).
Exhibition is of course just that, means nothing, but I usually count on it to instill some confidence against lesser teams. Not so much this year.

My guess is Dort is our least replaceable player. Without him we have 2 or 3 centers who are clearly not ready to play at the ACC level so we'll have to depend on forwards.

I am disturbed by our apparent lack of perimeter defense. I think that's our number one priority to work on.

Way too early to start drawing conclusions. Our NCAA overall record is still 0-0. These are purely developmental games. Let's revisit in a couple of weeks.

Agreed. Already gave up on football before the start of October. Guess I can skip MBB too.

I agree completely. Sure, winning is good for morale, but coaches have a number of objectives in these games, including identifying areas that need work, experimenting with different player combinations, and trying out new players to assess what they've got. Winning is secondary to other important goals.

When we hit the Houston, USC and Vandy games, we will find out, with a decent degree of reliability, how the ACC season may unfold. I expect that we may win 1 of those 3 games and hopefully will be competitive in all such games.

Yup - large annual roster turnover pretty much guarantees that the performance we see the first few games won't look at all like what we see mid-season. Poor 3-point defense is largely a matter of reacting more quickly to ball movement and rotating correctly plus just plain effort. Color me cautiously optimistic.

Poor 3 point shooting, when the players were not good 3 pt shooters at their previous schools, and have not shot well in 2 exhibition games, is a strong indication of future poor 3 point shooting. My one hope is SOMEONE on this team turns out to be a good shooter and Madsen develops schemes and plays that get them shots. Our depth inside is not great again, especially if Dort is limited by injuries. So my expectations right now are not high, but I will gladly be surprised.

With respect to 3 pt shooting, I agree. But I was talking about 3-pt defense, which folks had pointed out as a Cal weakness in those exhibition games. I hope/expect that will improve because Madsen has proven that he can coach it and, at least based on last season, can recruit the guys who will play it. Cheer up! The current Cal football shyte-storm is no fun, but as Cal fans, we've learned to be resilient.

What concerns me is that Oregon State had a lot of roster turnover as well. And the ACC looks tough this year. But, it is early and Madsen's teams seem to get stronger as the season progresses.

I agree, Madsen's best skills are motivating his team, building chemistry, and getting the most out of otherwise mediocre players. So this team may start clicking at some point, I just hope it's December and not late January!
My biggest concern is Dort's backup, because if he's injured we need someone ready to step in and not be afraid. Is it Yeanay (20 pts vs OSU, impressive). Is it Mitrovic? We need a real plan for the 5 spot, not a Dort-or-bust hope and a prayer.

Yes, understood you were talking about 3pt defense. A team shooting 44.8% agsinst us is a combo of: 1) good shooting, 2) bad defense and 3) bad luck.

Similarly our shooting 31% is a combination of: 1) poor shooting, 2) good defense and 3) bad luck.

As you said, there is reason with new teams early in the year to expect that their 3 pt defense will improve. Unfortunately that cuts both ways. Our 3 pt defense and OSU's 3 pt defense are BOTH probably not great right now, Thus the indication is that we are not good 3 pt shooters. I do expect our 3 pt defense to improve, but unless we have a guy breakout and we get him shots, I think the reasonable conclusion, consistent with the other data, is that we are not good 3 pt shooters.

Last year we were #36 in 3pt % and #43 in 3 pt % defense. We were #21 in 3 pt % differential with some elite teams, teams that went deep in the tournament ahead of us. However, even though we were a great 3 pt shooting and defending team we were only #112 in 3 pt attempts and were only #159 in 3 pt attempt differential, attempting less than 1 more 3 pt shot than our opponents each game.

We had a really good team last year that had some bad breaks and was not able to reach its potential, but also did not press its advantage. In the old world i would be eager to see them get another shot playing together. Im just not as sanguine about our prospects this year.

Exactly - every program is facing the same challenges with roster turnover.

Granted the season is just starting and there is room for improvement. But these two results are pretty concerning. Winning by one against a West Coast team that only won 15 games last year and losing to a team that only won 17 games, both of whom had a weaker SOS than Cal, is not very encouraging. Whether or not the offensive and defensive schemes are in place, you would hope/expect the talent level of an ACC team to be more than enough to handle a West Coast and Pac-12 team.

Speaking of "press", wouldn't it be fun to see Cal occasionally slap a full-court zone press on the opposition? Maybe just 2-3 times per game. Unfortunately, it's one of those things that requires a lot of practice to run well, and with so many new players, there are higher priority activities for practice time.
