0 points and 4 fouls ... not his best game to say the least

I have to take the blame on Wallace's performance tonight. I never should have joked that he looked like an old man in warmups. My bad . . .

If Wallace is going to have a bad game, tonight was the night to do so. Good thing Jabari went off, and Oakland was undermanned. Wow, we got lucky.

His line tonight:
0 Points on 0 for 3 shooting
2 rebounds
2 assists
4 fouls

And someone on this site was talking about him being an NBA lock after his last two games. In reality, Wallace is not as good as his stats of last two games nor as bad his stats for this game. His a great athlete, a better than average Pac-12 guard and a below average shooter for a Pac-12 off-guard.

Good opponents are going to kill Wallace (and Cal) by going zone until he develops a CONSISTENT mid-range jumper.

Yep, I think you are right.

If Cal's 3-point shooters (Cobbs, Bird, Matthews) can make them pay, they won't be able to stay in the zone very long.

The remainder STUNK. I watched Hawaii 5-0 & Blue Bloods in the 2nd half.
Kravish, Cobbs, singer, Kreklow were bad, too, besides Wallace. GO BEARS!

Kreklow played well. He finished a couple times in the paint, had some nice dishes, rebounds and cooled off that Bader guy.

But yeah, Cobbs wasn't himself. Kravish didn't contribute much of anything. Singer's D (and shooting) was yikes.

Singer did get a couple of clean steals.

Why do we always have trouble with the zone? Seems like since I've been following them in 1995 it's an issue every year. We just don't recruit pure outside shooters? Thank god we have at least one!

Seems to me Sam should not be dismissed when discussing our good 3-point shooters.

Before his one for four last night, he was 2 for 2, iirc. That means he is shooting 50%.

Given that one of his attempts against Oakland came when he received the inbounds pass under the opponent's basket with about 4.8 seconds, dribbled just over center court, and shot from extremely long range, his long range shooting was not bad.

At the free throw line, he is appearing to be bedeviling himself with worry, and hopefully will get over it soon. It reminds me of the second baseman, Steve Saxe of the Dodgers, who in mid-career weirdly developed an inability to make the easy throw to first from his position on routine

I am not too worried about being zoned with this team. I also doubt that anyone is going to go zone just because of Wallace when we can put four other guys on the floor with him in a small lineup or three in a more standard lineup who are good shooters.

You are so on the money . And he plays the point like a true point. He has an excellent floor game .

Wallace seems to be looking to score more than moving the ball around. Cobbs was so off yesterday if it wasn't for the injury almost felt like he as throwing the game.

To be fair to Wallace, a 1-1-3 defense takes away penetration, and it is trouble for many teams. Penetration is Wallace’s strong suit on offense, so I did not expect too much from him against that defense. Oakland also took away Cal’s fast break, with good transition defense. This is another strength of Wallace. My guess is that the Oakland coach watched some film and saw what Cal can do if Cobbs and Wallace can penetrate. The bad news is that all our opponents will have access to the Oakland game film.

Ty again missed his threes. But I was more concerned about his defense. He committed four personal fouls and two of them were over the back fouls, and he should know that refs call those nearly every time. One was from behind when Bader blew by him for a layup. He was unable to contain Bader (neither was Cobbs able to do so). Only Kreklow could clamp him down, and kept Bader from scoring in the last 4 minutes, or maybe Cal does not win that game.

Kreklows pursuit and effort fighting through screens was great. Saw a glimpse of why there were some comparisons to Jorge.

I would only change "maybe" to "probably" in what you wrote above.

I had previously been wondering about your enthusiasm for Ricky, but last night he provided some compelling data, supporting your enthusiasm for him. Data, by the way, that is not adequately represented in the box score.

I think that this is the first time this year that Kreklow has played such a large role in a Cal victory. Bader was just killing us before Ricky's intense defense at the end.

Thanks, SB. One bottom line is both Wallace and Kreklow need to stay healthy and play well for Cal to be good this year.
