does that mean if JB hadn't come through I would have had to cancel my tix? Or would I have to go to Oakland games?

Ha, no it's just the weird way they set up the tournament.

They give each of the teams like Oakland and Coastal Carolina a game or two against the actual tourney teams and then they play a smaller tournament.

It is not a tournament in the sense that first round winners do not automatically advance. Not sure why they do this but their must be some reason.

$ - it's simply a tool to market the upcoming actual tourney and serves no purpose but to get the tourney's and its sponsors' names on a few screen "lower thirds" for the few of these contests that are televised- pretty much all major pre-season tourneys have these silly "pre-tourney" contests against lower division team. To call them part of the tourney when they have absolutely no possibility of affecting the final outcome is something of a joke. Same thing happened when Cal played in the preseason NIT.

I found this on an Arkansas message board.

It's also a way to get more games. The NCAA has rules regulating how many games you can play. You are allowed 27 regular season games if you play an in season tournament. You can play 29 regular season games if you don't play an in season tournament. A lot of the in season tournaments will have a game like Friday's to allow an extra game. You can play up to 4 games in your in season tournament bringing the total number of games to 31. Only 8 teams actually go to Maui which only allows for 3 games. Playing this game as apart of the Maui Invitational allows for Arkansas to get an extra game in while following NCAA rules.
