Senior rule is a great answer, truly.
But I also like: they were invited, but turned it down, stating they wanted to focus on schoolwork for the rest of the semester.

Well, it's not just an answer, it's a fact. The event has been around for years and always only featured seniors. I remember watching Darvin Ham win the dunk contest in the late 90's.

I know it's the true answer - I was not trying to dispute that.
I just am pointing out that the school part of it, for Cal students in particular, is something to think about, and I hope ours do.
