Don't get confused and think that because you show people love and loyalty, they will do the same in return

Seems to be some fallout from his decision to leave. I'm fine with him wanting to leave---it's his decision. But, deal with the consequences. Don't criticize others for lack of loyalty when you do the same.

Well, I was going to say symptoms of a 'young adult in the 21st century', but maybe you know more about the family situation than I do

Just wondering, but how doable is 18 units over the summer? I though 6 constituted a full load?

Using social media for this will make it ugly real quick.

He could be talking about anything, there's no point in reading too much into these tweets.

Virtually impossible in 6 weeks

Yes, people here should probably stop following our athletes on Twitter if they can't understand that these are human beings who aren't always tweeting about the one aspect of their lives with which we have a one-way relationship.

Then he's out of luck because there's no more scholarships and he's not a part of the program anymore. He'd have to continue as a regular student in the fall.

If he decides to stay (or has to stay because he Does not pass enough Summer units to graduate), is there a chance that Coach Martin can "find" him a scholarship (athletic or otherwise) or has that ship already sailed?

He could enroll at Gonzaga and take online classes at Cal. He just needs to be a grad student by the time the season starts to avoid sitting.

How many of the final degree requirement classes are offered online these days? Serious question. Won't he still have to pay Cal tuition anyway to take classes (online or not).

3 classes in Session A and 3 more in Session D is doable. No fun, and I don't know how you take many recruiting trips, but doable. Biggest trick seems like it would be finding enough of the right courses to fit into whatever requirements he has remaining. He's a legal studies major though so that should help with flexibility (lots of cross listed upper division classes iirc). Best of luck to him whatever happens.

Sounds like a really shitty summer. But in the end it will be all worth it to get that heralded masters from gonzaga university.

Finishing 18 units in 12 weeks (sessions A and D) would be equivalent to 22.5 units in a 15-week semester, or in 10 weeks (session B) would be equivalent to 27 units. I suppose either is possible but I couldn't have managed it.

He could also finish in the fall on his own dime and be eligible to play elsewhere in the spring.

More conventionally he could transfer, finish his degree while sitting out a year, then play as a grad the following year. Completing his grad degree would mitigate the impact of missing out on a Cal degree.

I'm cynical and believe that load is so heavy that HE won't be completing all of the work. How many of the courses require he attend all the classes and that he sit in the test in front of a responsible proctor and that the test answers come from his head, and that homework and associated assignment essays and reports come from his hand???

Stakes are high enough for him, and he's too smart and driven, to NOT find a way to graduate by end of summer and be eligible in Fall. No doubt in my mind about that. But the value of his Cal degree just shrank - he's missing 25% of the experience.

I say, NO WAY is he coming back to play for Cal, no matter what.

Sad, bc he was poised to become the #1 all time 3FG shoot, and now, bridges burned - he'll just be a name in the historical record book.

So much more than that. He could have lead the team in: minutes, points and shots. Plus a shot at a conference title, possible Sweet 16, and all the exposure that goes with it.

Something truly unfortunate and seemingly short-sighted went down. Don't like that a favorite player is now on the outside and in adversarial position. Wish bridges could be mended.

Let's keep it simple: Cal did more for Matthews Nickerson, Aaron R., Scarlett, etc., than they ever did for Cal. Loyalty? Please.

Or ... perhaps it's a basketball related transfer. Perhaps the kid has a desire to play (and win) in the NCAA tournament (a highlight for a number of college basketball players).

In his three year college career thus far he's 1) missed the dance 2) missed the dance 3) lost by double digits in the opening round as a 4 seed.

His potential "new" school within the same timeframe? Well ... they've played 9 NCAA tourney games in those 3 years and despite an average seed of "7" have won 6 tourney games (including NCAA wins over Oklahoma State, Iowa, UCLA, Seton Hall and Utah).

Perhaps the kid is thinking he "may" be the missing piece that will help put his new school advance to their first Final Four.

Sure he's got some work to do this summer .... but "perhaps", for a college basketball player .... it'll be "worth it". It was certainly "worth it" for GU's last graduate transfer .... Byron Wesley who got his degree in 3 years from USC and played in the Elite 8 while getting HIS Masters.

Yeah, and Gonzaga worked out great for Bing Crosby.

Ouch! Good one. Except Uncle Bing got kicked out of Gonzaga (vs graduating in 3 years from Cal). But Bing and Gonzaga made up.

Speaking of Cal, out of curiosity how many Cal Bears are on the NBA 50 Alltime Greatest list?

Sure, the Bears have a rich history. That history pretty much mirrors the Dons of USF (i.e. exactly 20 total NCAA tourney wins each ... had their success over 5 decades ago, etc).
