Hi guys,

Hope everyone is doing well in Berkeley. Here in Australia we are all in mourning after being screwed out of a bronze medal this morning. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I'll be calling the exhibition game tomorrow night with Brad Rosen (2:15am your time Tuesday morning) between Sydney University and UCLA. Thought you might be interested given it's against one of your arch-rivals and you might want to take an early look at Lonzo Ball. And the full replay will be available after the live broadcast (same link) if you want to watch at a more reasonable hour! Good luck to the Bears this season.

All the best,

I hope your boys take it to the bRuins! How competitive do you expect the game to be?

Great to see you back here on BI. It's a damn shame about your Olympic squad. I was rooting hard for them.

Not very, unfortunately. This isn't the Kings' squad they'll be playing but a composite team made up mainly with guys from the second and third tier competitions in Sydney. UCLA will get a better test against a couple of NBL teams (Melbourne/Brisbane) later in the tour. But I'm still looking forward to checking out Ball and the other couple of top recruits.

We flew over with the UCLA team. Kids seem nice and polite, and their head coach is like a helicopter mom on steroids. Kept yelling at the kids about only watching one movie of the flight, looking both ways before crossing the street, etc. Amazing...

Contrasting story told by one of the coaches. Sonny to Webb: what movies did you see? Webb: I watched game film the whole flight. Sonny: I had a more fun flight...

Man, that's super cool of you to remember us and come post on our site. Thanks.
I'm sure some of us will watch the game after the fact. You can give us a shout out on your broadcast!

I did just read about Bogut's complaints of officiating, and saw that last replay.
This is why I sometimes say that basketball is actually THE worst sport to be passionate about. The refs make a greater impact in this contest than any other I can think of. Soccer is pretty severe too, with PK's (or non-PK calls) having a HUGE outcome on the match. As we saw in the USA-Sweden women's olympic game, two game winners (one by each team) were incorrectly called back as offsides (maybe Carly Lloyd's was rules a push in the back, which would be more digestible, but the Swede goal was 5 yards onside). .... I digress - how about the Irish boxer who apparently totally won his fight, only to be robbed by judges on the split decision, and his Russian opponent was so severely beat up, he couldn't contend the next match for a Bronze. Even swimming - the Rio pool apparently has a current in it that favors lane 1 in one direction.
....Chess is a no-ref contest. Hard to complain there...
Anyways, point is, sorry about the Bronze game. Sometimes you gotta rationalize it away like this.... it's an impossible game to officiate! 10 big strong huge men all running around and jockeying for position. Anybody that has ever reffed will tell you, no way is it an endeavor approaching perfection.

So, yeah, did you watch any of Ball in high school?
I saw his final state championship match. He's smooth with the ball, very quick, doesn't shoot so much. I've thought it will be very interesting to see how he impacts the game at the next level. I think any team that allows him to get out and run a break will be in for trouble. But if coaches have a defender who is focused on (with requisite size and speed) picking him up before he gets the ball, and doesn't let him get up to speed as he crosses half-court, then we'll get to see what Ball can do in the half-court set, and I'm curious to see what that amounts to. 'Cause in high school, it became all open flow and then a laugher. NCAA coaches worth their salt will take this away from him as their first order of business.
This is what I'll be watching for. Can he stick the occasional J? Can he dribble-drive penetrate and dish in the half-court game?

And there's the shoutout to "Bearinsider and University of California Berkeley". And your Celtics got Jaylen. Good for you!

So, starters were:
Alford, Holiday, Hamilton, Goloman, Welsh.

Matt says UCLA has a retail store in both Sydney and Melbourne. Gosh...

Welsh hits first 4 shots (10 footers, Ivan Rabb make note of what can be done).

First subs were 3 freshman 5.5 min's into game:
Ball, Anubagu, and TJ Leaf
for Welsh, Goloman, and Holiday.
Ball takes over at the point and Alford slides to the 2.

Hey, Matt. You and your buddy keep saying how renowned UCLA is, how incredible it is to have them in Aus.
You were also definitely complimentary to Cal when we were there last year. But I DO have to remind you that:
* Cal finished far ahead of UCLA in the standings last year.

Ball so far:
made his first 3 with the funkiest of releases. deep.
missed an ally oops dunk as the pass from Holiday was a bit behind him.
made his first 2 free throws.
Made a breakaway dunk, but I thought he travelled!!
His defense is not terribly impressive. Matador style, hands not up enough and feet not moving quick enough, so man gets by him easily. However, he's a freshman so....
Honestly, I can't say exactly why he reminds me of Danny Zucko. He does!!!

TJ Leaf looking to be a very good player - will be a nice player for them over time.
Ball's second 3 rims out as he doesn't square his body up from top of key - bad form.

Alford just squared up and hit two 3's - way better fundamentals.

All 3 freshmen look good
Ball and Leaf as expected
Their 3rd freshmen maybe better than expected
Bruins will be much better this year and look out for welsh

Hi Matt,
Thanks for stopping by Bear Insider!

Are you aware that Jerome Handle Randle went to Cal? He plays for Adelaide 36ers!

Good luck to the teams you follow.

GO BEARS!!!
