Akinjo, and some other familiar faces ...

That was a bit ridiculous how he and Chappel were just going 1v1 while ignoring all others for a while there. Fun, but that obviously won't fly at the next level.
While we have GREATER needs for big men and shooters, here are some scenarios in which Akinjo could really help:tsubamoto2001 said:
I hate those types of "All-Star" games. It's not real basketball. I hated them when I was younger and hate them even more now.
As for Akinjo, I understand going after him, but we don't need a PG right now.concordtom said:

Both look more like combo guards to me from some stats and this video. They are both a bit undersized, Akinjo at 6-1 and Austin at 5-11. Akinjo averaged 5 assists and 13 points with the Oakland Soldiers, and Austin averaged 8 points and 2 assists at Boise State. Akinjo averaged 39% on threes but only 34% on twos. Austin averaged 51% on twos and 23% on threes. Not Jason Kidd numbers or Jerome Randle numbers.Gkhoury2325 said:
Hope Akinjo picks Cal. Would be a great duo with Paris Austin at the PG position. Most depth they will have there in 25 yrs at that position.
And they are not used to playing against actual defense, because most of them have not learned to play actual defense themselves in high school.superbear99 said:
I dont get to see much high school basketball but this tape shows me why the Cal players, among others, have no idea how to play offense. They are not used to playing against actual defense.
I think our first need is to get a couple of players who can play up front with their back to the basket. But I was not impressed with McNeill at point guard, except for a couple of games, and Austin's stats in the Mountain West conference of 2-3 assists per game were not remarkable. I dream of Jason Kidd, hope for another Randle, or a TJ McConnell, and will settle for someone who can get 5-6 assists, distribute, and run offense. I'm not as convinced as you are that we don't need a PG, but after looking at this video, I'd have to see more to want to sign Akinjo. He looks more like a combo guard to me. The other option is to install an offense which is not point-guard dependent, and depends on all the players passing the ball and getting open. Based on last season, I feel we have players who shoot first, and seldom pass. Jones is a young coach, and I have no idea what he will do, but if Austin or McNeill does not have a breakout year at point guard, this offense has to change to sharing the ball.tsubamoto2001 said:

I hate to be Debbie Downer, but before we get too excited, don't we need to see a lot more than clips from an all-star game or mixtapes made to hype a player?
