Since the other thread was hijacked beyond belief:
Who hasn't had an in home with him? He certainly has a lot of options.

Crazy. I'd love to see him here. Hope it happens.

Hope Akinjo picks Cal. Would be a great duo with Paris Austin at the PG position. Most depth they will have there in 25 yrs at that position.

Good video. Thanks for posting it.

That was a bit ridiculous how he and Chappel were just going 1v1 while ignoring all others for a while there. Fun, but that obviously won't fly at the next level.

I dont get to see much high school basketball but this tape shows me why the Cal players, among others, have no idea how to play offense. They are not used to playing against actual defense.

I hate those types of "All-Star" games. It's not real basketball. I hated them when I was younger and hate them even more now.

As for Akinjo, I understand going after him, but we don't need a PG right now.

While we have GREATER needs for big men and shooters, here are some scenarios in which Akinjo could really help:

For after Paris Austin leaves.
If Paris Austin gets injured.
If Austin gets in foul trouble.
If Aknjo is BETTER than Paris Austin.
If we're going up-tempo and need 40 minutes of pure point guard, or even want two super-quick guys on the court at the same time.

This team needs all the good players it can get... and PG is maybe the most important position in college basketball. The only way I wouldn't take Akinjo is if we had a rock-solid commitment for a really good PG in the 2019 class.

Both look more like combo guards to me from some stats and this video. They are both a bit undersized, Akinjo at 6-1 and Austin at 5-11. Akinjo averaged 5 assists and 13 points with the Oakland Soldiers, and Austin averaged 8 points and 2 assists at Boise State. Akinjo averaged 39% on threes but only 34% on twos. Austin averaged 51% on twos and 23% on threes. Not Jason Kidd numbers or Jerome Randle numbers.

I hate to be Debbie Downer, but before we get too excited, don't we need to see a lot more than clips from an all-star game or mixtapes made to hype a player? At least in this video of Akinjo you could see some good and bad, but not the whole picture. Akinjo's drives to the basket were good, especially off the first move. he has acceleration and can finish, against this defender at least. However, he allowed himself to get into a playground challenge with Chappel, I guess, and a few times he did far too much dribbling while his teammates stood around and watched. He did that on three occasions when he finally drove to the basket. He was only 1-3 on those three drives. He did penetrate, but he did it like Coleman: once he made up his mind to drive, he had no thought to pass to anyone. He did not concentrate on some of his passes, which were too low, waist ot knee level. On defense he plays the ball more than the man, like most young players. Twice I saw him lose his man, but twice I saw him get his hands on the ball. He made a couple of jump shots. Altogether a mixed bag.

I'm wait-and-see with our point guards.

And they are not used to playing against actual defense, because most of them have not learned to play actual defense themselves in high school.

I think our first need is to get a couple of players who can play up front with their back to the basket. But I was not impressed with McNeill at point guard, except for a couple of games, and Austin's stats in the Mountain West conference of 2-3 assists per game were not remarkable. I dream of Jason Kidd, hope for another Randle, or a TJ McConnell, and will settle for someone who can get 5-6 assists, distribute, and run offense. I'm not as convinced as you are that we don't need a PG, but after looking at this video, I'd have to see more to want to sign Akinjo. He looks more like a combo guard to me. The other option is to install an offense which is not point-guard dependent, and depends on all the players passing the ball and getting open. Based on last season, I feel we have players who shoot first, and seldom pass. Jones is a young coach, and I have no idea what he will do, but if Austin or McNeill does not have a breakout year at point guard, this offense has to change to sharing the ball.

I don't care about video. What I care about is a ridiculously long offer list from some of the best in the business who have millions on the line based on their ability to offer and sign the right guys. I'm not going to have the hubris to think I can look at a couple highlights and judge better than those guys who have expertise and who have spent hours analyzing the guy.

As for taking a point guard, Cal is bereft of talent. If the next five 4 stars are point guards, I'll take them all and figure it out. Cal needs players.

No idea where he is going. I asked one of those recruiting "experts" on Twitter- I think it was Bossi's Twitter Tuesday- Rivals? And his answer was ridiculous. He had no idea. It made me chuckle.
