since his son #35 Riley G, formerly from Archbishop Mitty in SJ, might get in the game for seattle.

Was not introduced if he was there. But they did introduce the pa announcer.

I noticed that tonight when i went to look at Grigsby's jersey. What happened to all the retired jerseys?

And worse, they let Gary Franklin of all people take Grigsby's jersey out of retirement.

jerseys (most? all??) moved into the corridor next to the main entrance, last night behind marketing tables, grigsby's included.

Before I become unnecessarily unhinged on this issue: does anyone know if Al Grigsby was at the game last night, and if so was he recognized in any way?

Thanks in advance.

Plenty of crappy music even while announcements were being made. Constant drone in the backround. If he were announced you would not be able to hear it. We could not understand any of the announcements.

They even played music while the kids teams were playing. Volume was ok silence is ok once in a while.

Absolutely no mention of Grigsby, father or son. Thought it would be a nice gesture by Seattle coach to let his son play on the same court as his father--but there I go, getting sentimental.

The DJ type music which has been minimal and subtle, returned last night. Unnecessary at basketball Let the Straw Hat band take care of music at Haas. The good news is that Oski Dunker returned!

Tune up time over. Starting Pac with the Sun Devils. That should bring the "I only watch Pac-12 games" crowd.

Riley Grigsby played four minutes last night. One defensive rebound and three fouls. No shots or FTs taken.

Does the guy that controls the music sit st the same table as the announcer or is he high up in that corner booth. Done of us would like to go see him.

I just received confirmation that Al Grigsby was actually at the game. Yet no acknowledgement whatsoever. Dude's jersey is retired and his son was playing against us, but nothing publicly to recognize Al or generate any excitement.

I give up.

Eric, was it "reliable confirmation"? Because we were sort of looking around and there were so few people there that I think one of us would've spotted him.

(Okay, so this is more of a snide remark about how few people were in attendance, but still... )
EricBear

No, we can't.

This is also the 60th anniversary of the '59 Championship team. I have heard nothing about any sort of event/celebration/recognition. At this point I have to assume it will come and go.

No big deal I guess. A bunch of Benjamin Buttons were on that squad. They are getting younger, we can fire it up for the 70th anniversary when they are back in playing shape.

I swear to God I was not a crank like this prior to BearGreg asking me to get involved with BI.

Eddie Kleinhans would always mention former players in attendance. Good grief, one time he even made mention of me being there.

Do they do this at all this season?

I don't recall a former player announcement this year, but not sure.

another thing they only do sporadically, is announce other Pac12 scores. That's another low hanging fruit. Can't they get a sponsor for that? (football dropped it for a year or two, but brought it back)

Maybe Al didn't want to be recognized. How sad would it be to have played when Cal was at its best with packed Harmon gym and then get a standing ovation however many years later in front of a dead 5 person crowd?
Give to Cal Legends!

https://calegends.com/donation/ Do it now. Text every Cal fan you know, give them the link, tell them how much you gave, and ask them to text every Cal fan they know and do the same.

As the above poster said, there were so few people, it would be hard to miss him. I did a quick scan thinking he might be there, but did not see him. That's too bad they didn't announce it. It might have been the loudest cheer of the night with runner up taking the lead after being down 18 points.

The more I think about it, that really is low class not recognizing him. Someone dropped the ball.

Why do they need a sponsor to regularly announce other Pac-12 scores? Seems like a very easy thing to do. As you noted, they have been doing it intermittently.

Al Grigsby was at the game to watch his son last night. He was sitting about 2/3 of the way up the chairback seats behind the Seattle bench. He seemed to be keeping a low profile by not sitting courtside or lower down. But he was moving around the section talking to different people. I know this because I was watching him during the times the game didn't deserve my attention.

I was a big fan of Al Grigsby (who wasn't?). He gave 6 years to the Cal program. Even Jason Kidd deferred to him, saying it was Al Grigsby's team.

Darryl Imhoff, Kevin Johnson, Al Grigsby, Jason Kidd. Those are the four retired numbers for the men's Cal basketball team. How could Al Grigsby not be recognized in one of his rare visits back to Berkeley? It's a shame, and I'm embarrassed to be a supporter of Cal athletics today. How can we ask former players to "Come Back to Cal" and support the program when oversights like this occur?

I will continue to support the Cal basketball team through this frustrating period. There will be better days ahead. But today, I'm not a happy Bear.

agree. they should show the scores regardless of whether they have a sponsor or not.
the reason I mentioned a sponsor, is because it's the type of sponsorship that will raise revenue AND improve the game day experience. I feel some sponsorships do one, but not the other sometimes.

Well said. Thank you for posting your thoughts on this. I feel much the same way.

For what it's worth, here is a very nice Al Grigsby article from back in the day (1997- Sweet 16):

Another really nice read on Al:

https://norcalpreps.rivals.com/news/grigsby-a-bay-area-treasure

This:

"In fact, this mutual admiration relationship eventually culminated in Grigsby's number 4 being retired and hoisted into the upper reaches of Haas Pavilion.

"It's a special privilege," Grigsby commented, adding, "I take my kids to games there and they ask me questions about it." Also, Grigsby recently bumped into Cal senior Patrick Christopher at a restaurant, introduced himself and the Bears second-leading scorer and rebounder commented, "We were just talking about you, about looking up and seeing your jersey."

Can't do that anymore - it's on a plaque in the lobby.

That's what is so frustrating. There is constantly talk about budget issues, funding, practice facility, etc. etc.

Yet we can't do the basic stuff that simply requires a little effort. A few years ago I toured the new locker room and the display with Lamond Murray had the wrong jersey number. I have no idea if it's been fixed but things like that shouldn't be very difficult.

Nice to see the owner of the board show public disgust over the way the athletic Dept. handles some things.
