I haven't been follow Cal athletics seriously for the last couple of years. Graduated in 1986 and have been a fan since 1978. I thought it would be a 50/50 decision on retention
but that was before the news of all the speculated transfers. This is really depressing to see a coach retained who's players don't have any confidence in him.
Off course it depends on who actually ends up leaving but so far McNeill checking out is not a good sign, don't care what you think about his ability he was still
one of the better players on the team. If there are two others, depending upon who goes and who they are all replaced by?...this could get really ugly!
I guess we will find out if he can actually recruit at a higher level because that's what it will take to keep us out of the cellar next year and the year after if three
of the starting five leave(obviously just speculation at this point).
As for Knowlton, I would be too hard on him. It may not be his fault. After all he did come from Air Force. Nobody expects national championships and league titles from a
military academy. The administration may have decided to go back to the future so to speak. Back to the days of Bob Bockrath, where we just try and keep things
respectable and pay on the cheap for coaches and staff. Basically back to a "stepping stone" program that "says" all the right things but "does" nothing to make
it happen.
Hopefully, if Wilcox has done nothing wrong(with this current situation)and he experiences success they will retain him at market prices. That is at least my wish but
this smells like we are in for a long hibernation in men's football and basketball. I just get this feeling if any of our major sport coaches has any success and someone
comes calling, we will fold. Who knows, such is the life of a Cal fan.
Go Bears!
