Joel Brown Shooting Ability?

I was very impressed with Joel's court presence Tuesday, especially on defense. He's listed as 6-2 but he is long and quick that he appears much bigger on the court.

My concern is that the one free throw he took was one of the ugliest shots I have seen. His profile doesn't list his shooting percentages from high school. Does anyone have access to this info and if so could you please post it? He's a player that could be very valuable but curious about his shooting ability.

It's a valid question. Let's see him shoot some mid-range jumpers in games first. What's great is that we have time as Paris Austin seems to be up for the challenge of being the floor leader and Joel doesn't have to be pressed into situations he's not ready for yet.

Rep is he is neither a descent nor confident shooter. That's going to need to change if he wants to eventually close out games as a pg.

I don't mean to be snarky, but, based upon his one free threw attempt, there is a 50% chance he never makes a free throw while at Cal. ( he clanked the rim off the backboard) Otherwise, I was pleased with him.

Who ever thought Jason Kidd would end up high in the NBA rankings for "most 3 pt shots made, career"? (He's 10th all-time.)

Give Joel Brown 5-10 years of steady shooting practice and let's see what happens!

It can be done with less years of practice, as Jaylen Brown proved. He was a very poor three point shooter at Cal and got better in the NBA, after only a few years.

Karl Malone started as a 48% FT shooter. He ended with a career average of 74%. He improved quickly. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Then there was Wilt Chamberlain who shot FTs at 62% in college and 51% in the NBA. He tried and tried to get better. He even went to a psychiatrist. He said that "after two weeks the psychiatrist had become a better free throw shooter I was."

Found some AAU and FIBA stats:

https://basketball.realgm.com/player/Joel-Brown/Summary/109052

4-19 from 3 in 10 AAU games, 2018-2019: 21.1%
48-107 on 2s: 44.8%
32-50 on FTs: 64%

3-7 from 3 in 6 in U19 World Cup games, 2019: 43.7%
7-17 on 2s: 41.2%
4-12 on FTs: 33.3%

I expect he'll take open 3s, but his main contribution on offense will be to do what Austin does: penetrate and drive to the basket, pull up on min-range shots, or pass to open bigs or 3-pt. shooters. FTs could be painful, to watch.

Austin hasn't been good from 3 during his college career:
Freshmen: 6-23, 26.1%
Sophomore: 7-33, 21.2%
Junior: 9-32, 28.1%

He's been respectable on FTs lately, though:
Freshman: 35-57, 61.4%
Sophomore: 126-165, 76.4%
Junior: 88-121, 72.7%

South is probably the guy we want with the ball at the end of games when the opponent is fouling:
Freshman: 65-83, 78.3%
Sophomore: 55-64, 85.9%
Junior: 81-98, 82.7%
It's all just entertainment, so find a way to enjoy it.
The refs are there to feed your hatred addiction and keep the games close.

Wilt was too focused on his home workbench statistics.

Thanks for the stats R90. They're basically about where I thought they would be. Hope he continues to work hard on his shooting because his defense and quickness are definitely going to be a strength.
