subscriber only? dunno why, but it works for me..
> A Superior Court jury ruled in favor of one former University of San Francisco women's basketball player Thursday, awarding Marija Galic a total of $750,000 because of "intentional infliction of emotional distress" by head coach Molly Goodenbour.
> The jury ruled against Marta Galic, Marija's twin sister, on similar allegations against Goodenbour, saying the coach's conduct was "outrageous" but Marta Galic did not suffer severe emotional distress. The Galics' lawsuit named Goodenbour and USF as defendants.
> In siding with Marija Galic, the 12-person jury awarded her $250,000 and an additional $500,000 in punitive damages, according to the verdict posted Friday morning on the court website. The jury also ruled that USF and/or Goodenbour was "grossly negligent" regarding Marija Galic.
>Marija Galic claimed to have two nervous breakdowns as a result of the alleged abuse by Goodenbour.

I can finally come out of lurking. I'm the lawyer for the Plaintiffs in that case. It's been informative going on public message boards to gauge the pre-trial commentary about that case.

How has it been "informative"?

It helps one make some reasonably educated guesses as to the initial impression a jury might have about the case by looking at the most commonly expressed opinions on message boards.

Goodenbour has been an manipulative, if not abusive, coach her entire career. It's no accident she has to recruit overseas because she's well known in prep circles on the West Coast.

I'm surprised she's still there, but then again USF doesn't really care about women's basketball.

Agreed. As I worked on the case, I became shocked as to how much of an "open secret" it was in the WBB community about Goodenbour's abusive behavior towards her players. Quite a few third parties reached out to me or confirmed all kinds of stuff that she did throughout her career.

Why has USF kept her?? Is there any talk of Goodenbour being fired.......

St. Mary's fired their WBB coach in 2023. There has never been any information
in regards to the reasons he was let go.

I stopped attending St. Mary's games a few years ago because of him.

As for Molly, she's gotten numerous chances because of her Stanford background, and she's recruited very well internationally at USF. She's won enough there that apparently USF didn't care, but remember they also had to fire the baseball staff, pretty much, for sexist stuff.

USF only cares about men's basketball and will only be moved to action in other sports, it appears, by some kind of scandal.

As for Paul Thomas at SMC, a group of players didn't like him, while another group did. He hadn't won for a couple years, and had alienated a few people on campus, so they fired him for, hard as it may seem to believe, swearing in practice. He's suing, of course.

I think the McKeever case had something to do with it, as SMC was afraid they'd get the same kind of bad publicity, but there was no comparison, really. He was an adequate coach, never my favorite -- he never came to a single open gym at Carondelet, despite us having a couple players who could help him, and when I was at Campo, wouldn't even talk to a girl who wound up being all-conference -- but didn't win enough, in the long run.

We'll see how the new coaches do, as SMC is a tough place to win. Moraga is pretty isolated and the school is small. The men got to Australia first, but the women are well below the radar.

I have no personal visibility with respect to USF's administration, but the day after the verdict, they apparently sent an e-mail out to their students and alums stating that they respect the jury process, but still believe that the allegations against Goodenbour "are false."

Of course, they likely have a contractual obligation to indemnify her, so as long as the case isn't finished (e.g., they can still appeal), they may be required to publicly support her regardless of what the administration truly feels. But I did get the sense that various people within the administration like and support her regardless.

Lots of people at Cal "liked and supported" Terri McKeever ... for years.

I liked that Cal competed at high level of women's swimming, and was prominent on the International scene. I didn't know anything about the treatment of the athletes.
Not sure my reaction is all that different than many alums (or human beings.)

I hear USF is appealing the verdict.

I'm not worried about that if that is what they decide.
