Notre Dame Picked as Conference Favorite, Hidalgo Named Preseason Player of the Year - Atlantic Coast Conference (theacc.com)

Stanford was selected 7th in the conference. Clemson, Cal & Boston College are bunched tightly in spots 13, 14 & 15. GO BEARS!

I am in the camp that you cannot be certain about a team in the portal era until they step out on the court. But clearly our five-year record has not been impressive to others.

I am surprised that Louisville is ranked so highly since they will have an amazing nine freshmen on their roster this year. But they do have the #6 ranked recruiting class, and Walz gets the benefit of the doubt based on his own long-time winning record.

Stanford is very likely going to struggle. Their recruits are not up to their previous standards and they lost two elite post players. Cal could easily finish ahead of them.

Agreed. The portal is a new variable that we don't fully understand yet. An early couple of metrics to use while gauging a coach's portal success will be win totals and do high contributors return for a second season rather than return to portal.

So wins will be the focus (as well as overall quality of play, teamwork, etc. in all games) until the next PortalPalooza.

One of the best predictors of the immediate future is the near past. Here is how the current coaching staff has performed in conference play:

. 2019-2020: last place, 3-15
. 2020-2021: last place,1-12
. 2021-2022: next to the last place, 2-10
. 2022-2023: two spots above the last place, 4-14
. 2023-2024: four spots above the last place, 7-11

Average: 1.5 spots above the last place, 3-12

That means finishing around 16th place in the 18 team ACC.

Of course, optimists could point to last year's improvement and hope for better than 16th place, maybe 14th or 12th or even 10th place finish in the 18 team conference.

Will any of you be happy with finishing in the 16th place in the 18 team conference? How about with finishing in the 14th or 12th or even 10th place in the 18 team conference? If you are satisfied with that, you must be Jim Knowlton.

A simple .500 overall conference record is the minimum for being mediocre. The current overall conference record is 17-62 (78% losing, 22% winning).
