From Twitter:
The Seattle Times‏ @ seattletimes 8m
MT @ JaydaEvans : Multiple sources confirmed reports that @ CoachMcGuff (Husky women's basketball coach) is leaving for Ohio State

I wonder if a very good recruit might want to play elsewhere now.
She could be a "Plum" of a pick.

Here is the link for the 3 recruits UW signed for 2013

Wow, that's pretty lame. 2 years and buh-bye.....

Sad for the UW, seemed like they had gotten some traction....

Does leave the door open for....perhaps.

Obviously it's all good for us recruiting wise, and the fact that players have to start over getting used to a new coaches schemes etc. But, it seems like a negative trend is starting here in the Pac-12 as promising coaches seem to want to go "back east" to coach. I'm not even going to count Boyle in this catagory, and some of you would argue that Nikkie Caldwell wasn't that good of a coach, etc. but, you get my drift.

I think we're all going to be sweating a bit whenever one of the top schools in the BCS conferences east of the Rockies need a women's hoop coach. The burning question here is, are our Cal Women's Hoop backers pockets deep enough to keep Lindsey?

have no worries about Coach G leaving for a better offer. :Lindsay

There's a lot that Cal has going for it and there's a reason Lindsay is a great fit. The Pac-12 is getting stronger and will continue to do so. Hire some coaches who have more ties to the area and I think you will see more longevity. These coaches who've recently departed all seemed to have returned to their roots (conference or geographical).

Lindsay is an Ivy League nerd....she's here for a reason. I have a good feeling about her staff too. I think they like their work here.

I was very impressed w/ the UDub coach over the last two seasons. He coached and recruited well. It does hurt the Pac 12 to lose such a fine young coach!

Kelsely Plum is that dead-eye three point shooter that Cal has never been able to land...It certainly would fill a need and perhaps fill that scoring void left w/out Laysia Clarendon. Does anyone know where Cal stood in the hierarchy of her recruiting? GO BEARS!

Per this thread and posted by wvitzbear, this was a conversion he relayed thru a 3rd party "The hardest phone call Kelsey ever made was to Lindsey telling her she wasn't coming." Sounds like we could had been high on her list.

Well, I recall reading here that Plum chose UW in part because she wanted to go into communications/broadcasting.

If she reconsiders her choice someone should let her know that Cal offers one of the nation's best graduate programs in journalism (print, broadcast and multimedia) and the Pac-12 studios are based in SF. Just sayin'....:cheer

McGuff returning to his Midwest roots to a historically strong WBB program may, indeed, be an opening for Lindsay to land Plum. Kelsey could be an important piece for the team next year, and part of the continuing build-up of the Cal WBB program. Replacing McGuff won't be easy, but I'm sure UW will be going after some very good coaches.

Who even knows if she'd want to leave. However, a few years ago when Daugherty left and the UW didn't let players off the hook, there was much bad press. If it were to happen again it wouldn't look to good.

After all, Close let Hartman out of hers at UCLA and others have done the same.

It's still way to early to tell what will happen, if anything....but in the meantime we can dream about the possibilities. :cheer

Hope we go after Plum. Worst case is she has to take a red-shirt year at Cal. There are worse things in life.

I also believe Lindsay is here for the long haul. Once kids figure that out, and the UW coach just helped us by doing the opposite, they will find Cal even more attractive. From what little recruiting news I have found, it appears UW was after many of the same 2014's as Cal.

Still don't understand what makes Seattle a better media market than the Bay area. Or is McGuff a better recruiter than Lindsay?

Supposedly Plum chose UW because of the school but I'm sure her being comfortable with the coaches played a part too. Also what if the new coaches doesn't keep the assist. coaches especially Kevin Morrison who could had been the coach that brought Plum to UW. We shall see how this plays out.

Buyout was 1.7 million I think.

FYI, from Seattle Times:
http://seattletimes.com/html/huskies/2020802809_huskywomen18.html
Quote:

The fate of incoming recruits — Kelsey Plum and Brianna Ruiz from California and Chantel Osahor from Arizona — is uncertain. Per NCAA rules, each is required to play for Washington because they signed a letter of intent last fall. Plum, a left-handed point guard, is a McDonald's and Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-American.

"I'm in no position to comment on the situation," Plum stated via email in regards to whether she'd request a release from her letter of intent. If granted, she could be subjected to a lost year of eligibility due to NCAA rules.

If a player is actually "released" she wouldn't have to sit out a year, but if UW refuses they would.

There is another potential issue with Plum transferring to Cal. One, UW may not let her out of her LOI, meaning she would have to redshirt and sit out a year.

Additionally, because she would be transferring within conference, the Pac12 may force her to not only sit out a year, but give up a year of eligibility. Not positive about this, but many conferences have rules regarding in-conference transfers.

The key if UW would release Plum or not. Justine Hartman was released by UCLA and she was able to play in that current season.

With McGuff's departure, and likely Morrison's too, I'm hoping Plum turns to Lindsay and Cal. The Final 4 Cal run showed Plum the kind of program she'd be joining and leading. Hooking-up with old friends would be an added benefit.
wvitbear

I believe in WBB, you would just redshirt a year. It is not like the men's transfer rule within the conference.

For the life of me, I cannot understand how non-revenue sports can lay out these kind of sums for coaches. What are the market forces driving up these salaries?

I remember some discussion of this question when Nikki Caldwell was lured away from UCLA by a big money offer. Someone on this board posted the salaries for Cal head coaches for all sports in the AD. Putting aside the obvious outliers (Montgomery and Tedford), there was a huge gap between women's basketball and all the other non-revenue sports. Why?

If basketball is the highest profile women's sport, and there is some extra prestige associated with a successful WBB program (compared to other non-revenue sports), then I suppose that might account for the numbers. But it doesn't seem sustainable in the long run. (Unless there are deep-pocketed donors for women's basketball which don't really exist for other non-revenue sports. If so, I'd be curious about the reasons for that disparity as well.)

Football programs generally support all other sports except MBB. But if you have money left over then you can afford extra trimmings. Ohio State is about as good as you can get revenue wise for football.

A few years ago, I posted what programs thruout the NCAA spent on their various sports. It is an eye opener.

He was the players' choice once McGuff left Tuesday. And they were as pumped as their new coach at Friday night's news.

Sounds like the players like him. How it affects the recruits we will find out.

With the shock of McGuff's sudden departure, I can appreciate how UW's promoting Neighbor, and retaining Morrison and Barnes, may ease the minds of players, who must feel abandoned by their HC. Neighbor , though, has never been a HC. Further, McGuff''s departure to OSU comes at an inopportune time for conducting a national search for a new HC at UW. So did UW's AD, Scott Woodard, make the move for expediency sake to maintain program continuity and retain their recruits, as well as the hope that McGuff's longtime assistant can keep the competitive roll going. I'm not so sure it will work. With Neighbor now in place as HC, will Kelsey and other recruits request LOI releases? I guess we'll know soon.

Osahor and Plum are on board. I don't believe Ruiz has requested a release but she's not made the public statements the other two have.

If Plum is staying at UW, I'm even more curious to learn about Lindsay's East Coast recruiting swing. A PG and a "big" post must be on the current shopping list. Will Cal commit the recruiting resources to consistently cover the East Coast recruiting territory into the future? What did Cal's Final 4 run do for the Bears' recruiting profile?

Good point, wvitbear. A few AD's (e.g., Texas) are outliers with respect to bringing in truckloads of revenue. Ohio State is definitely among the top 3 or 4 in the country.
