Not sure I like the 10 minute quarters. Wonder how Coach G feels

Girls high school games are played in quarters so it's not a big change for women's hoops. More interesting is the number of fouls allowed (5) per quarter before shooting free throws. On the fifth foul, the player fouled automatically shoots two free throws. This eliminates the one-and-one free throw rule. Gottlieb should stress improvement on the free throw shooting percentage for the team next season as there will be more shots taken.

Advancing the ball

The panel approved a rule that allows teams to advance the ball to the frontcourt following a timeout immediately after a made basket in the last 59.9 seconds of the fourth quarter and any overtime periods - I don't like this change. Exciting to me is the mad dash through 5 defenders to put up a desperation half court shot (which go in some times)

Teams also will be allowed to advance the ball to the frontcourt after securing the ball from a rebound or a change of possession. In these scenarios, the ball would be inbounded at the 28-foot mark on the side of the court where the scorer’s table is located. - What??? This is a horrible idea!

The committee made the initial recommendation because it felt this change would add more excitement to offensive possessions at the ends of games because teams would no longer be required to travel the length of the court after inbounding the ball.

I like all the changes ... the foul rule is the same as in high school and it shakes out about the same in terms of getting into bonus. The biggest change is that the count resets to zero at the start of the fourth quarter, which means that early second-half fouls don't stick with you.

I don't understand the "advance after a rebound" rule. So, you don't have to call timeout? You don't have to dribble? You just secure the ball? What if you see a teammate streaking down the side and want to hit them with a pass? Can you pass or is that overridden by the advance rule? How is a defender to know whether the rebound is going to lead to a play or an advance?

I like the rules because I thought coach Gottlieb did not call enough timeouts and employ strategy. This is exactly like high school rules which I like...Cal can come out and full-court press or half-court trap in the 1st or 3rd quarters and if some key players get into foul trouble, the coach can change her strategy for the subsequent quarter. GO BEARS!

Haven't read the rule, but in the NBA, you have to call timeout, and you have to call it before any ball movement up court. So a player gets a rebound, calls time out right away -- ball is advanced. Player gets a rebound, makes an outlet, time out is called -- ball is taken out at the spot where the ball was when time out was called.

Even the pro refs screwed this up in game 2 of the finals.

Maybe I am being an old ruddy ruddy, but I kind of like the rules the way they were (sounds like a Barbara Streisand film). Have no problems with a 20 minute half.

Boys HS games are played in quarters too...I don't understand the point of making a difference between the Men's and Women's game at the collegiate level...
