ASU going down to BYU after scoring only 17 points in the first half. Shooting 17% from the field, 11% from three, and 42% at the line in this one. Their lack of good athletes this year may make this team a much weaker one than expected.

ASU finally won by 8 against a team I thought they'd handle easily. Apart from the seniors Riley and Richardson, Charli's Lot look a bit tentative.

They have been slowly going down hill the last few years. And they didn't recruit for next year very well also.

It's funny, I don't disagree with you in a sense (thinking back to the Briann January days), but I just looked them up and was reminded: ASU made the Sweet 16 last season, only losing Miss State whom I believe was a 1 seed.

And before that, they had at least 3 consecutive 2nd Round NCAA finishes.

Speaks volumes to how much they overachieve.

I could be wrong but Dymond Simon might been the only McD's AA ASU has ever signed.

And I actually think the swing forward 6'3" Levings they signed from 2020 could end up on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team next season.

So today, ASU barely survives Idaho State at home in overtime, 74-69.

I still think 7-2 is 7-2 when it comes to ASU....same record at this point last season when they finished only 22-11 and made the Sweet 16. They always find a way to overall overachieve.

Incidentally, they got a late 2020 commitment from a 6'4" Aussie https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/college/asu/2019/12/03/6-4-australian-center-commits-asu-womens-basketball/2602853001/

The decline I see is mostly in their defense. They have always given up a high per centage of oppositon FG %. But their steals are down. Are 11th now and finished 10th the year before. Use to be 5th or better.

Charli lost two ranked recruits with the past couple or so years to transferring. Armani Hawkins to NC State, and guard Sabrina Haines is the 2nd leading scorer for Kentucky so far and i think might have another year left there.

Charli is happy (for 20+ years) with mediocrity. She looks great when winning a PAC12 or getting to the NCAAs but never tries to build a team to win it all.

She NEVER recruits within her own state but would rather take the best of the leftovers from California and Texas. The state of Arizona has had some really good players the past 5 or so years but Charli never goes after them hard. Armani Hawkins was an "ok" player but Sabrina Haines was a big loss for them, she is a very intense player and a lock down defender.

One REALLY irritating habit of hers is that she argues EVERY call that goes against her with the officials. I mean EVERY call. I can understand a few that go against you but everytime a call doesn't go her way she carries on, and on, and on with the officials to the point where I think they shut her down.

I can attest to this. Refs must hate her.

Her recruiting is indeed a bit funny. She found a lot of hidden gems in the Pacific NW at one point, e.g. Briann January. I actually am remembering another McD's AA she signed (behinds Dymond Simon), Kirsten Thompson a 6'6" post same class as Ash & Dev from Washington state. Thompson was a top 20 kid who played a lot early then ended up near the end of the bench by the time she graduated. She's also gotten a lot kids from the Midwest, including a JUCO or two who made impacts.

I actually enjoy watching ASU, They always defend, and they often score late in the clock after wearing people out with movement and screening. And everyone on the roster gets at least a few minutes on the court.. But it is a system that may not appeal to players who want some individual freedom. I think this year, they were counting on Mbolito finally catching on. She looks like a great athlete, but is still not looking like she fits the system.
