Hopefully one or more of you can post your thoughts on how they do today. I probably won't be home in time to watch. Second meet of the season. Will be interesting to see how they match up against the heavyweight programs of gymnastics. Cal is very much one of them now!

Cal in third at 148. Oklahoma leads with 148.250 and LSU at 148.125. Meet tightend up

Cal finishes 49.275 on vault. 197.275 for meet and third. Mayhew and Frazier with 9.9s. So room to grow for Bears.
Oklahoma crushed bars 49.700 but OU just misses 198 with 197.950 and wins meet.
LSU in second

Cal was not as close as the final scores indicate. Bears had a high score in four events of 49.359. LSU had two events scored in the 49.425+ and their best event at 49.525. Oklahoma registered two events at 49.525 and their best event score of 49.700.

As I stated last week, Cal is not ready for the top teams early in the season. They performed a little better today, but no team will reach the top, scoring only in the 49. 325 or 49. 350 range.

What expertise do you have in women's gymnastics?!

They lost to the two overwhelming favorites to win the national title. This was a very good performance, considering how much distance they put between themselves and Utah, another Final Four contender.

coachdeke-none. I have followed the women's gymnastics team closely for the last 3-4 years in a similar manner that I have followed the women's water polo team. I watch the majority of their competitions and track their recruiting, etc.

Cal finished #2 in the nation last season. This is the year that they need to put it altogether because the team is senior-laden. I hope that the alleged star from Great Britain can join the lineup during the season. It appears that they could use her talent to close the current gap.

The only sports that I know really well are the ones that I played as a youth: basketball, football, baseball, fast pitch softball & track 'n field.

What sports do you possess expertise in?

Maddie Williams was also sick so she skipped a few routines too. I think the cascading effect of that plus no Ondine caused that extra separation.

I cannot wait for Ondine to break into the beam and bars lineups. I'd also kill to be the only NCAA program with not just one - but TWO- yurchenko double full vaults, but I'm sure the leg events will take her much more time.
You've got to remember that she is still recovering from ACL reconstruction in the late spring. She is being very smart and strategic with her recovery and as she said in an interview wants to wait until she's 9 months post-op to compete.

She's no "alleged" star. She was the 2024 British Championships all-around champion.

It's early in the season. Cal is still figuring out its lineups in a post-Andi Li/Gabby Perea world.
Oklahoma and LSU have insane depth (and NIL pockets). They are overwhelming favorites. Cal will continue to compete, and improve.

Ondine is a legit world class level competitor. I'd argue she would have lifted England to the Bronze for the team competition. Would she have medaled individually? I dunno. I'm so not an expert about Olympic gymnastics. (I was a gymnastics dad to my daughter when she did it for 8 years or so) See her Wikipedia. She was a silver medalist at the World Champs in 2022. Had she not injured herself prior to the Olympics she would be "Olympian" that all the bigger programs boast of having. At the international/elite level of gymnastics is a superstar.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ondine_Achampong

She put off coming to Cal to train for the Olympics and was really unfortunate to get injured. If she can add anything this year to this Cal squad, It is icing on the cake to an already talented team. The true Ondine era probably won't begin until next season when eMjae and her will make a formidable one-two.

I haven't finished watching the meet. Just got thru the first rotation. Wow .. Casey Brown's dismount ... anyone know what that skill is called? She looked like a Olympic diver the way she flawlessly twists in the air. If she consistently sticks that landing ... lookout!!! What a way to anchor the Bears on Bars lineup.

Just a couple seasons ago Utah was the measuring stick for this Cal program. We had a hard time hanging with them but now are regularly beating them. Oklahoma and LSU are the next level. This squad can certainly hang with them and who knows maybe by the end of the season this squad is able to match and even push past these two at the end of the year when the meet really matter. This past weekend's meet is a good meet to learn alot and see where they have to improve.

JT - Casey's dismount is a toe pike 1/2. The irony is that Jordan Kane was scheduled to be the anchor on bars. Jordan has a big release move (and competed exhibition last weekend) - my guess is that after Mya Wiley's fall, the coaches opted to put in Casey for a hit, since Jordan has not yet competed bars for Cal. Jordan's routine is also great and I hope she gets a chance to see how it scores. Awesome clutch routine for Casey who wasn't even originally in the lineup - she just has to make sure she's hitting those handstands.

Looking forward to watching Cal insert at LEAST one more 10.0 start value on vault. That will really be key to remain in the top tier. I'm hoping Jayden Silvers is getting back 100% healthy and we get her Yurchenko 1.5 back in the lineup.

Thanks, guys. I used the wrong adjective "alleged" for Ondine. I didn't know what to call her so I used an inappropriate word. It was not meant to be demeaning in any way. Please forgive my poor use of the English language.

Schroeder71 - sorry for being especially defensive of Ondine - I can't wait for all of us to watch her shine as a Golden Bear. She was a HUGE recruiting win, as will be Tonya Paulsson.

You aren't wrong about the current gap between the top two teams in the country and the rest of us. I hate to admit it, but they are just so stacked and always draw top recruits. Already in post-season form it seems. At this point I'm hoping Cal continues to build, stay healthy, and continue to take steps closer to those top two. We're SO close, and we CAN be right in that mix this season.

And for any more "recent" fans - welcome!!! I don't care how you found Cal Women's Gym But I'm assuming the team's climb in rankings and notoriety may have played a role. Just remember - we're spoiled. These are the good years. And with Justin Howell and Liz Crandall-Howell at the helm, I have no doubt many more good years ahead. But we are lucky to moan and gripe about issues when we're already so far up the totem pole. There have been so many years of devastating injury, hardship, rebuilding.. and even a briefly cancelled program to endure and help us get to this point. I say this as a DIE HARD Lions fan (who became a Lions fan the day Jared Goff was traded). I'm loving the current ride but have to admit I didn't endure the pain and work it took to get here! I am guilty of yelling at the TV when Maddie takes a miniscule hop on her otherwise perfect routine. We're a bit spoiled right now! I can't wait to watch the women hit their stride this season! Go Bears forever (I said this before Fernando Mendoza and I'm sticking with it).

thanks to everyone for the info and views

I'm a new Cal W gym fan and yes, they drew me with their recent success. I've always watched gymnastics in the olympics, but not outside that.

I attended my first Cal meet two years ago, and a Cal tri-meet last year. I follow the team and plan to attend a meet this season.

so please keep rolling with the update and insights!
