Hey, y'all. Hope you're all well. Let me preface this by saying that I didn't know where I could post a thread like this, so please forgive me if this is in the wrong forum.
As you all may have heard already, Tennessee's head coach, Tony Vitello, will be the next manager of the San Francisco Giants. I'm sure there'll be some questions about hiring a college baseball coach with no pro experience, let alone major league experience. After all, it's never happened before. There'll also be some questions about how his coaching style will translate to MLB.
But make no mistake, this is a home run hire for the Giants.
Vitello's record speaks for itself. In eight seasons:
- 52 Players Drafted (including current Giant Drew Gilbert)
- 10 First Round Picks
- 341 Wins
- 2 SEC Regular Season Titles
- 2 SEC Tournament Titles
- 5 Regional Championships
- 3 College World Series Berths
- 1 National Championship (2024)
Vitello, warts and all, knows how to coach. This is a gigantic loss for the Volunteers; he's the most successful coach in the history of a once-hapless baseball program and perhaps the most popular figure on campus, mostly because he has won the school's most recent national championship.
In Knoxville, there are streets named after Peyton Manning, Philip Fulmer, Johnny Majors, Pat Head Summitt, and others. I'm sure Vitello will have some street on campus named after him before too long.
Take good care of Tony, y'all. He's a good one.
