Cal dominated UOP sweeping 25-17, 15, & 11. Cal led by MB Ashleigh 14 kills, Li 12 Kills, & ex beach VB player Portia Sherman 11. Also in the lineup were 2 freshmen setter Anna Flores (wow), OH Abby Zimmerman, SR OH Thompson & libero Sophie Johnson. They basically went the entire match with 7 players. I really liked our setter FLores. I thought she looked very good. Cal perform well but again it's against UoP. Looking forward to Tomorrows match against UC san diego. Go Bears!

Question on the ESPN streaming who was the female commentators for the VB match. I believer she was a former Bear VB player. DIdn't get her name. She had a great sense of humor constantly making fun of Portia who spent 4 years playing beach VB & now transitioning to indoor. Even though Portia OH is only 5-9 she can really jump.

About time that we are using ESPN's graphic package as both Cal and Stanford were often mocked for their old graphics packages (if you could call them that) that we both used for Pac-12 online streams. Also, it is nice to see that we finally have a dedicated volleyball court rather than just extra lines on the basketball court.

Too early to tell. Last year they started off 3-0 at home too playing a cupcake schedule. Then went on the road and started to lose games, including to SJ state & UC Davis. Even though I was a season ticket holder for some 15 years (stopped maybe 4-5 years ago) I'm not an expert on the sport. I will hold judgement until they go on the road & play some better teams. The only 2 starters I think that are returning are OH Thompson & the liberos Sophie Johnson (L). Thompson was very inconsistent last year. We will see how the team look after our first road games.

This week's opponents: UOP is tied for last in the WCC poll. St Marys polled 5th.UCSD is 8th in the Big West (Sac St 5th, who we play next month).

Cal polled 13th in the ACC.

UCSD beat SM last night 1-3 & we play UCSD tonight at home & then tomorrow go to SM to play. We should win both games.

true, but Flores (based on stats - I haven't seen her and the Bears play) could be special - at least special enough to start as a true frosh, supplanting Stirbu who ended up being the setter last year. 84 assists in two matches. 12 assists per set.

Zimmerman have each had one strong game and one lesser game. But, they play nominally different positions.

Phils has not seen the court - is she injured? or just buried on the bench by newcomers Zimmerman and Sherman.

Yesterday game was more a challenge for Anna as setting was not as efficient as the first game alittle off & UCSD was a pretty good blocking team possibly throwing the Bears off at least the first two sets. Only person throwing it down was Abby. Abby has a nack for dinking the ball probably because Adele effective as she was hitting well. Team had Lots of trouble with receiving & digging too..to many unforced errors. Ashleigh was subbed out in the 3rd set. So far in two games this has been the only major sub. Still a good win for the team. Could depth be an issue if something happens to any of the OH'ers? Still to be determinded.

Safe to say the Bears volleyball is not big time.

I'm with you. I watched the match on tv. CAL did not look very good. I know you're right. I remember the Feller years.

Bears will learn from today's road loss to the Gaels.
Young team with two freshmen, Zimmerman and Flores, leading the way.

Bears battled back from a significant deficit to take the 4th set. I think it took a lot out of them heading to the fifth set.

Last season's frosh standout Carbonara hasn't played. Is she hurt, or have others passed her in the rotation? Mahalo.

A third freshman, Siena MacCudden, is also in the rotation. All will grow a lot this season. Having two new 5th years Cari Bohm and Portia Sherman on the team will help them too.

Mahalo for the update. I saw the replay of the St. Mary's match, and I did see her in the bench area but not suited up.

5th yr trfr Cari Bohm mb looks like a good defense player with lots of blocks, very active & experienced player. First road test disappointing result.

When they do have a stats it's a two step process 1) hit the stats for the game (assuming their is a stat icon), then #2 it jumps to the master calendar for all games & you have wade thru the entire menu again. BTW Thomsen & Li played much better.
