We are coming down the home stretch. Early voting has started in many states. Per Carville, there's really about 20 days left to campaign. Obama and Clinton are hitting the campaign trail, and Harris has finally agreed to do something live that requires contemporaneous thought and communication. Trump declined a 2nd debate. One could see this as confirmation of certain recent reports that internal polling has things moving in a direction more favorable to Trump.

Even though Univision prohibited journalists from interviewing the attendees, @mtracey did anyway, and at least 2 he spoke with said they were hard-core Kamala supporters who went to cheer her: https://t.co/WCBWnhwJ61

Has she? I guess she did the podcast and Howard Stern. Maybe I didn't word that well. My impression is everything has been highly controlled and safe. No open forum press conferences that I'm aware of. Town halls can also be controlled but it has more of an appearance of being different.SBGold said:what? she's been doing live interviews for weeks, was turned down for another debate and is going on a town hall in 13 days. The audience members I spoke to were selected with the help of a company called FansOnQ, according to the company's founder, Conny Quintanilla, whose title for yesterday's event was "Audience Manager." The company puts out "casting calls" for events like the Latin Grammy Awards, which have been previously held in Las Vegas. It's a type of company that you might not be consciously aware exists, but once you're told of its existence, it makes perfect intuitive sense: people who want to dance at award shows are "vetted" by this particular company, perhaps for good looks and rhythmic skills. That's the same company which filled the seats at Kamala's town hall.Quote:
These aforementioned attendees were essentially just "seat fillers" they were not the audience members who were called on to ask pre-selected questions. Those audience members were flown in from around the country at Univision's expense. Which is a bit odd, because there would certainly have been plenty of genuine "undecided Latino voters" in Clark County, Nevada who I'm sure would've been more than happy to ask Kamala Harris a question.Of course, the reason she has to do this is that she cannot afford to have a random person ask a question about the war in Ukraine and the genocide in Gaza or the attacks on Lebanon. She looks bad enough as it is on the softball questions - if someone asked her a hard question, even 60 Minutes couldn't edit her response into something that people would believe.Quote:
NOTE: The non-question-asking attendees were still integral to the televisual production of the event, hence their recruitment. Uninformed viewers at home were under the false impression that the people they were watching react to Kamala's answers were "undecided voters," when numerous of them were in fact pre-committed Harris voters who sought to attend for the specific purpose of demonstrating their support for Kamala.

https://www.racket.news/p/transcript-america-this-week-october-39cYeah, she's handling those questions beautifully.Quote:
Matt Taibbi: He shifted to a question about Israel policy and asks basically why Prime Minister Netanyahu isn't listening, or appears not to be listening, to the United States, and we hear this answer.Matt Taibbi: Okay. Then what happened was they released ... So we hear that answer, right?Quote:
Kamala Harris: The work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by Israel that were very much prompted by or a result of many things, including our advocacy for what needs to happen in the region.
Bill Whitaker: But it seems that-
Walter Kirn: And it starts with, "Well, Bill." Let's remember that. Let's tag it there.
Matt Taibbi: "Well, Bill." Yeah.
Walter Kirn: Yeah.
Matt Taibbi: So they subsequently released a new version of the interview. It's now up everywhere on YouTube, on their site, and it's different. So if we could go to number two and start at 01:32. We're going to go back in time a little bit, like one question, the pre-question, so you can get a sense of what the momentum of the interview was like.Matt Taibbi: Okay. So, Walter, why is this unusual in journalism?Quote:
Kamala Harris: This war has to end.
Bill Whitaker: We supply Israel with billions of dollars in military aid, and yet Prime Minister Netanyahu seems to be charting his own course. The Biden-Harris administration has pressed him to agree to cease fire. He's resisted. You urged him not to go into Lebanon. He went in anyway. Does the US have no sway over Prime Minister Netanyahu?
Kamala Harris: The work that we do diplomatically with the leadership of Israel is an ongoing pursuit around making clear our principles.
Bill Whitaker: But it seems that Prime Minister Netanyahu is not listening.
Kamala Harris: We are not going to stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end.
Walter Kirn: Well, first of all-
Matt Taibbi: Because it's ... I'm sorry, just to preface it, it could be one of two things, neither of them great. But one would be absolutely unprecedented and one would be merely a little bit slimy, I guess, would be the way to describe it.
Walter Kirn: Well, go into detail on that first.
Matt Taibbi: So when you do interviews with political figures, they're often quite long, and sometimes you will cut for size or for continuity reasons.
Walter Kirn: Right.
Matt Taibbi: You're not doing it at the behest of the campaign usually, or you shouldn't. But if it's the answer to the question, to the original question, it's not really unethical. I mean it's a little weird. It's in a gray area, I would say, right?
Walter Kirn: Right.
Matt Taibbi: So if you ask that question, why isn't Netanyahu listening, and your original release says thing A and your second release says thing B, but thing B was actually a response to that question that you caught, that's okay. But if you take an answer to another question and you stick it in as the answer to this question, that I have never seen before. What's unusual about this is that they completely took out the first version.
