The campus seems…

I come into town annually for a football game but don't really get on campus. Today I toured the campus with my HS senior daughter. It felt way more crowded than I remember it - less openness between buildings, just tighter. Maybe it was always that way but I was a wide eyed pup of a student???

It's been years since I've been on campus, so I can't give you my eyewitness impression. However, I've read about new buildings being constructed over the years and not that much about old ones being torn down (maybe Evans Hall?). It stands to reason that there would be less open space than in the past. One thing that has always struck me about visiting a number of other college campuses (Maryland, Alabama etc.) is just how much open space they have between buildings. The walk from one building to the Student Union/food court can take 15 minutes. Cal (and San Jose State), being in highly urban areas, have less land and end up much more cramped.

Yes. We went to Davis afterward and the difference was a bit shocking.

The University needs to buy up buildings and lots outside of campus and expand there.

Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/calegendsdonate/donate-football/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

To be in the Top 1% of all NIL collectives we only need around 10% of alumni to give $300 per year. Please help spread the word. "If we don't broaden this base we're dead." - Sebastabear

One major area of improvement is Memorial Glade. Back in the late-'80s / early-'90s, that whole area was littered with the so-called "T buildings," the temporary barracks-looking structures that had been there since, what, the 1940s? For an urban campus, I think UC Berkeley's planners have done a pretty good job of maintaining open spaces.

Faculty Glade remains timeless, Memorial Glade is open and sizable, the eucalyptus forest and the big crescent lawn above Oxford are all open areas, and there's some tranquil paths around Haviland Hall. It's a delicate balance because the central campus is only about 180 acres total, and the student body has grown by almost 40% over the past 30+ years.
