- 27 YO daughter looking at possibly attending for grad school.
- She's well-traveled and has lived on the Upper West Side of NYC and in Chicago near Wrigley. So we aren't talking about someone straight out of the suburbs.
- On the other hand, she's still my little girl.

Thoughts?

As someone that spent 10 years in NYC and riding the subway at midnight more than a few times on the Upper West Side in the 1980's from Columbia on 120th street all the way down to Battery Park City where I lived, I would say that she'll be fine at CAL.

No worries.

You don't have to respond to topics you know nothing about, though admittedly that would reduce your posting by at least 75%.

No worries on campus and in town was just there. Answer in part depends on where she decides to live. Berkeley would be a good answer but it opens up another can of worms. Good luck a I hope she becomes a Bear!

I would recommend she stays at the I-House, she would be less exposed to potential crime, most of which is off-campus (esp. Southside). That kind of setup will be safer than what she had living in the UWS (Columbia grad?)

I was there with my daughter a few months ago checking out the school. If anything it felt safer than when I was a student way back in the day. Telegraph was more commercial than I remember it, which 'cleaned up' the vibe heading onto campus from the south. There were other things in that same vein. I did not go there with it on my mind but I came away with zero concerns about my daughter if she had been admitted (she wasn't). The advice above about taking care with her student housing is wise.

For keeping up with what is going on around campus and environs:

*Emilie Raguso, owner, editor and reporter of The Berkeley Scanner is a Cal Bear and for my money, the best crime and courts reporter in the Bay Area and beyond. She used to get recalled Alameda D.A. The same crowd that cried out to defund the police also threw a hissy fit when TPUSA recently held an event on campus. The speaker? The controversial extremist, Rob Schneider!

If you feel like unsafe, it's because you are weak.

A friend and classmate told me essentially the same thing, and noted that the repurposing of "People's Park" is also anticipated to help.

My Dad came down to CAL for his Masters in Poli-Sci in 1957 from UW.
He lived at the I-House as well and was a member of the foreign service fraternity Delta Phi Epsilon.

Impressive academic path!

Downside of I-House is that, for a 27yo, the rooms are a bit small and she might have outgrown the dorm experience. Upside is she will have an instant social network and will be in the most efficient setup to get work done (no shopping, cooking, washing dishes for meals, no transportation issue or need for a car/parking, very safe environment). Chances are she will have others in her major living there, convenient for study groups.

I keep in touch on an almost daily basis with my former I-House buddies, it really does live up to its motto of "that brotherhood shall prevail".

I was in good terms with the lady who arranged the room assignments and got upgraded on my second year as an undergrad there to an 8th floor room with the bay view, and a roommate from San Ramon who was away 3-4 days a week - japckpot.

As a grad student a few years later, I got an even better view, with a single facing the Tri Delt house, and ended up dating a girl from the Davis coop house, the Julia Morgan big house just up the street.

Bottom line, there shouldn't be much to worry about for a 27yo Columbia grad attending Cal in terms of her safety.

A few tidbits here, granted it's Reddit. May give you some relatively fresh insight….especially on the rent pricing. I would ageee being 27 in the I house might be an issue but every person is different.
