Okay, you get a star from me. You live in Palo Alto, you can afford to send your kids to a school that doesn't engage in stuff you don't approve. Lower enrollment is taking down public school districts in CA so maybe they will listen when parents vote with their feet.

How do you teach World History, or talk about current events in the world, without teaching students ABOUT Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, etc.?

And the best way to teach HS students about any religion -- aside from basic beliefs -- is to go to a place of worship, and have them hear from, and interact with, members of that religion. Let them have an experience of it.

I went to Catholic school thru HS, and in HS, the Comparative Religion class -- where we learned about the world's non-Christian religions -- was one of my favorites.

I'll have to track this case, because the District should be smart enough to NOT settle. I can't wait to see the plaintiffs' EVIDENCE showing that the students were damaged by their experience. A religious group offered Qurans & literature to the students??? OH NO!!!!!

IF a jury finds that the students were damaged by receiving religious literature and talking with Muslims at a mosque, then the Feds are going to have to shut down the Jehovah's Witnesses & stop printing the Watchtower, and stop all Mormon proselytizing missions in the U.S. as well.

As it turns out, I was just summoned for jury duty in San Mateo County Court last week, and I have to say that our pool of prospective jurors was a very diverse group, with me & other white folks in the minority. I think it would be extremely difficult to come up with a jury where a majority were sympathetic to the idea that HS students would be damaged by going to a mosque, talking to people, and receiving literature.

Palo Alto USD is in Santa Clara County, but I think the demographics are similar enough.

Any attempt at limiting the religious freedom of Muslims will run right into Our 1st Amendment. We either have Freedom of Religion, or we don't.

I don't think the irate parents have a leg to stand on. They're going to have to show EVIDENCE that their kids were DAMAGED by their experience. Aside from that, all they have is their Islamophobic, cartoonish propaganda.

It won't take long for the jury to see that the plaintiff parents are doing far more damage to their kids than any mosque visit could.

Agree with Cbass but the hubris here represents another pathology typical of "liberal" privileged haunts like Palo Alto.

My take is the parents welcomed a social justice component because it aligns with their fake virtue. However when little Sara had to wear a head covering and the Imam said mean things about Israel- …"wait a minute, this isn't what we mean by 'social justice'. Little Sara is traumatized and can't go to tennis lessons, let's sue."

It was stupid of the school to have the kids participate. Students shouldn't be participating in formal religious activities during school.

I see everyone is a legal expert.

My public high school didn't have us visiting different religious houses of worship. I suspect they wanted more separation of church and state, which also used to be part of our constitution, but may be not with the current SCOTUS. But the actual name of the lead plaintiff is Community Members for Religious Neutrality in Public Schools, which by the way is an advocacy group which is well beyond Palo Alto parents.

As the risk of again agreeing with Dajo, it is was dumb to take the student to where where they are forced to participate in formal religious activities, and the way things are going this isn't a jury trial, but a Judge concluding by a matter of law discrimination occurred. Certainly the way federal judges are going - see the recent cases where UCLA got hammered as an example. You have for example, Jewish kids who were forced have picture taken of them inside a Mosque in traditional Muslim garb and the pictures were then posted on the internet without anyone's approval, which is going to be as per se privacy privacy violation. If you are going down the woke way of propagandizing your curriculum with social justice classes (no one is alleging this was a religious studies class) at least use common sense.

Without minimizing what the Dajo said, and the church and state problems. my concern is more that those with resources simply feel privileged to sue (and it isn't just liberals) about everything they don't like rather than simply adjust their lives to accommodate their views. You don't like what you see as woke brainwashing or unbalanced social justice, just move your kids out of the system, and vote out the School Board. Not everything has to be a Federal case.

Not sure this applies here but when I register my kids for school each year, there is a box to opt out of allowing pictures of your kids to be posted.

I want to know ALL the facts and I suspect the press report (and the complaint) is not the full picture.

An parallel - and one that I think is useful because it pushes us - is that if you go to an active California mission on a field trip girls probably are going to be encouraged (required?) to wear a skirt that goes past their calf. I think it varies priest to priest but they also may be encouraged to wear a scarf over their head. But I think we both MIGHT agree that taking kids to California Mission is both fairly common and probably something most kids should do. Heck, one of the FEW intergenerational traditions we have in this state is comparing notes with our kids about which mission they built and what yours looked like. They got Roman crosses on most of them.

Now is that infringing and starting to get close to prohibitions? Yes. probably But I also think the plaintiffs would have nearly NO problem with this. It is the fact that islam is scary to them.

Im sure with the recent cases in the CA federal courts about what happened on campuses, the plaintiff attorneys are licking their chops this occurred at a Mosque.

Why?

Christians, Jews, and Muslims all pray to the same God -- the God of Abraham.

If a Christian or Jew were encouraged to pray with Muslims in a mosque, they're praying to the same God as Christians in a Christian Church, or Jews in a Synagogue.

I would be astonished if the Imam, or the lay leaders at the mosque didn't make this exact point.

In fact, they may have asked a critically important question: "Why all the hate?"

Why, indeed?!

Again -- the Plaintiff parents & counsel are going to have a lotta 'splainin' to do.

"Everyone?"

I agree with your last paragraph. The politics of grievance, combined with an overdose of parental "protection" are disproportionate.

The kids, left unto their own, are far more resilient than their parents. They'll be fine. And if they're at all like their fellow HS students & young adults under 30, they're far more accepting of difference -- especially religious difference -- than their parents' generation.

The best angle the parents can hope for is the atheists who don't want to be exposed to ANY religion. That's their only chance, IMO.

Gonna need some more context on what actually happened here.

There was a field trip to a mosque. I can see several good educational reasons for that. Was this trip about promoting a particular religion or just learning about it?

The story states that students "were taught" that Islam promotes social justice. Who said that, exactly? The teacher? A school representative? Or an unscripted comment from someone who works at the mosque?

The story also says that students "were encouraged" to wear hijabs and to take home a Quran. Again, who encouraged this and what is the context? If they are just free parting gifts on the way out the door then that's very different from requiring them in order to participate in a group activity.

I went to a Christian (Lutheran, specifically) school for elementary. My fourth grade teacher once took us to a synagogue to learn about Judaism. Never felt indoctrinated (obviously that school wasn't trying to do that), just felt like I learned more about what Jews believe. But of course, these days people will find cause to flip the **** out whenever Muslims are involved. I would need to know more before I determine whether or not flipping out was warranted.

Christianity, Judaism, and Islam share historical roots but if their core definition of God's fundamental nature and identity are different and incompatible, are they really worshipping the same God?
