An observation on the 2023 Cal Football Previews and Predictions
As you might imagine, I'm a voracious consumer of all forms of media concerning the 2023 College Football Season, particularly the thoughts on Cal's prospects for 2023.Additionally, I read opponent message boards and see what other schools' website publishers are saying. There's a view that's pervasive and strongly felt in 100% of what I've read and heard to date -That is that Cal does not have a QB. The inference that I take is that everyone believes that Plummer left Cal for greener pastures and Cal picked up Jackson and Finley off the scrap heap. My guess is that in today's world, you are either returning proven production or you entice a proven player in the transfer portal. That said, a handful of younger prospects are projected as future stars. ones with far less experience than Jackson.Everyone may be right that this is the Bears Achilles heel, I'm just surprised at the uniformity of the view and the strength of it. One recent example is that 247s UW Scott Eklund just wrote that while Cal is in good shape with Sierra Canyon WR Kwazi Gilmer, they can't imagine he will choose the Bears because "who will throw to him"?What I haven't seen is what I believe is an objective view of Jackson - along the lines of - Jackson was a composite 247 four star recruit out of HS and 247 rated him a 4 star (90) rated portal player. He's undersized and played sparingly in his first two years at TCU. He was in the mix to be the starter at TCU all through Fall Camp before falling behind eventual starter Chandler Morris and National Champion run hero Max Duggan. While he only attempted six passes (completing all of them), Jackson displayed strong arm strength and elite athleticism. He played well in Cal's Spring game, showing deep ball touch and dynamic running ability.
