The latest on the remaining class of '27 targets

Increasingly likely that Hayden Stepp will choose Oregon on Wednesday. They were his earliest suitor before his lead recruiter took a HC job at Cal and has gone back and forth between the schools. He seems to have settled on the Ducks despite a far less obvious path to playing time as the glitz and prestige win out. At least for now . . .Conversely, the confidence grows for DaJohn Yarborough to pick the Bears as his college destination. The colossally sized 4 star IOL will announce on July 11thEli Woodard's lean towards Miami feels like it has solidified. The Hurricanes national prominence, their success with WRs, the South Beach location all feel like factors. His head likely leans towards the Bears but his heart seems to be in Florida. Despite Sam LeJeune's recent commitment to Florida State, this is a young man that feels far from certain and at risk of sounding like UCLA honks talking about Myles Baker, this process is FAR from overCal put themselves in position to create some flips with players with whom they were finalists and didn't get the verbal nod. If the Bears can create some momentum on the field in September and October, look for 2-4 highly rated recruits to reconsider their decisions including Stepp and Woodard.

The Opening

Some thoughts on how players in Cal's orbit performed:- Kamil Loud had an outstanding weekend with two interceptions. His savvy in zone sets was obvious as was his physicality- Charles Davis III had a dominating first day and was virtually uncoverable. His length and athleticism make him a near impossible one on one matchuip. He still has work to do with his route running and ability to find holes in zones but he's a physical specimen.- Hayden Stepp was easily the tallest defensive back in attendance but surprised with his ability to flip his hips and run with the bevy of small, explosive WRs. - Eli Woodard impresses with his route running, hands and his ability to get behind defenses as he did for a 52 yard TD. Not the biggest or most explosive WR in attendance, he was likely the most well rounded- Jaxsen Stokes was among the most impressive RBs in attendance. A lot of juice in his legs, he was also an effective pass catcher. He's impressed throughout the Spring and Summer, showing that he's underrated by the scouting services

Tuesday afternoon update

Greetings. Gorgeous day here in the Bay Area. Snuck 18 holes in this afternoon which was wonderful.Came back to some updates on Cal's targets:Hayden Stepp : Oregon is working to make it hard for him to say no to the Ducks. Toss up though Oregon will be hard to beatBrody Rudnicki: This one feels good. Truly a 2028 recruit but the vibes are positiveSam LeJeune: We're less from 24 hours from his decision. Very close between the Seminoles and the Bears. I had heard on Sunday, some of the doubts about FSUs coaching staff were nagging at him, however he has said he's going to go with his heart and guts. While it's a toss up, FSU may be where he wants to be. Even if he does select the Seminoles, I don't think his process is overDaJohn Yarborough: I think the same concerns LeJeune has with FSU are shared by Yarborough and in his case, I think it's a tipping point in Cal's favor. I don't believe UW is a factorUhila Wolfgramm: Another coin flip. BYU is close to home, a HC who really resonates with his family and it feels like the Cougars may have a slight lead at the moment. The more time he takes after his OV to Provo last weekend, the better for Cal to let the glow of that wear offEli Woodard: He originally decommitted from USC because he loved Miami. Their track record with WRs, their financial commitment and their national prestige are all real factors. That said, he really likes Cal, the staff and having his HS teammate here is not small pudding. UCLA is likely on the outside looking in. The latest I'm hearing is that he may be a slight Miami lean. He's going to announce soonBrayton Feister: As I've said over the last week, he feels like the Ducks to lose. Cal wants him and he feels the love but will it be enough?Jason Johnson: Announces next Monday, He's going to Texas.

Sunday night - 6/21 short update

I think quite a bit will become clear this week, not everyone but more than a few.Three quick hitters:Cal has more than a puncher's chance for Hayden Stepp . It's Oregon and Cal (Alabama still lurking but unlikely) and the Bears and Ducks continue to battle it out. It's a coin flip but one I think Stepp will look to resolve this week if he can.We had somewhat written off Sam LeJeune in no small part because the crazy strong defensive lineman had made comments publicly but his uncertainty about the cultural fit of Berkeley vs. Florida State. That may not be as big of an issue as it read and he's very much undecided between the Bears and Seminoles. Washington is involved as well but this feels very much like a 50/50 toss up between FSU and Cal. He's likely to make a decision sooner rather than later.Eli Woodard had a good visit with UCLA. His comments for the UCLA writers may or may not imply that the Bruins have moved into a dead heat with Miami and Cal, my guess is they still trail. That said, Miami was the catalyst for him to decommit from USC and they are not going to go quietly in the night. My sense is that Woodard would like some time to think things through but all three schools have but one WR spot open and doors may start to close on him.

Recruiting Update - June 18th

There's a lot of misinformation out there from the national networksLet's recap:Uhila Wolfgramm - He's visiting BYU this weekend and will choose from Cal or the Cougars. Our intel says Oklahoma is not longer involvedMyles Baker - He's locked in at Cal. He's NOT going to visit LSU. UCLA? Wishful thinking from themHayden Stepp - He will not visit Georgia and is down to Cal and Oregon. Toss up at this pointEli Woodard - He is going to visit UCLA this weekend. IMO, this feels perfunctory for relationship reasons and perhaps his agent looking to see if the Bruins will come up with an even bigger number than what Miami has proposed for NIL. This feels very much like a Cal vs Hurricane battle and right now I like where the Bears sitDaJohn Yarborough - He's all over the map, both literally and figuratively. He loved Florida State and he's now headed up to Seattle to visit UW. Where he eventually commits is really hard to judge. Brody Rudnicki - The QB who plans to take a mission for a year, thus is really a 2028 recruit, visits BYU this weekend and is down to Utah, Cal and BYU. He announces next Wednesday the 24th. Coin tossJason Johnson - The crazily underrated DL visited LSU last weekend and is at Texas this weekend. He wants to decide in mid July. He really likes Cal, though the allure of the bluebloods and the risk that they can offer more in NIL looms. Hard to handicap but cautiously optimisticBrayton Feister - My gut tells me he's headed elsewhere. Cal likes him and feels good about him, so we will see how things shake out. Sam LeJeune - I'm little surprised he hasn't committed to Florida State. My guess is he has concerns about the coaching staff's job security and FSU as a program overall, however, I think he knows Cal is not a culture fit for him or his family and the distance is a factor. My guess is he ends up somewhere else than FSU but not Cal

Bear Insider Rating

99-100: Elite national prospect (Five-star)

Considered one of the best prospects in the nation and a likely difference-maker at the collegiate level. Displays all of the physical skills to be a future All-American with potential to be an early-round NFL draft pick.

90-98: Elite state prospect (Four-star)

Considered one of the best 30-40 prospects in the state and a top 250 national prospect. Displays the physical skills to be a major early contributor at the collegiate level with high professional potential.

80-89: Quality prospect (Three-star)

Considered one of the best 100 prospects in the state and a top 500 national prospect. Displays the physical skills to develop into a contributor over the course of his college career. Has the ability to become a professional prospect over time with development.

70-79: Solid prospect (Two-star)

Considered one of the top 250 prospects in the state. Has the physical skills to be a potential contributor at a D-1 program over the course of his collegiate career with significant development. Professional potential is low.

Staff Predictions

The predictions represent which school each staff member believes will ultimately sign the recruit, and the confidence meter represents his level of certainty in that outcome.

Example #1

If the predicted school is Cal and confidence is set to “High”, then the staff member is saying “I believe that this recruit will ultimately sign with Cal and I feel very certain about that.”

Example #2

If the predicted school is “Alabama” and confidence is set to “Low,” then the staff member is saying “I believe that this recruit will ultimately sign with Alabama, but I’m not very certain about that.”
