Updates 1/6 - Transfers, recruiting and staff movement
Couple of things:-Former four-star Cal recruit and ESPN top 300 player Raymond Woodie III has entered the transfer portal from Florida State and is chatting with the Bears. He will be a Sophomore in 2021 after playing nine games and tallying 25 tackles for the Seminoles while primarily playing as a backup- The Bears continue to be focused on landing a coveted prospect in the February signing period. Regardless of the staff's level of confidence, this prospect continues to be aggressively recruited by others- This is the time of year when coaching staffs are being built and augmented. As has been the case, the last few years, Justin Wilcox's group is coveted by many programs. We are aware of Torre Becton and Marshall Cherrington being actively pursued though it would be surprising if they are alone- While this is certainly a compliment to the quality of the group that Wilcox has built, Cal needs to be in a position to be both proactive and reactive in retaining top talent. To that end, over the past few years, a sizeable war chest has been created under Knowlton from donors to give the program the resources they need to reward and retain relevant staff- As always, Cal will look to evaluate each staff member relative to their compensation, title and role and if another opportunity affords them meaningful career advancement that the Bears cannot provide, they will wish them well in their new endeavors. Cal will always look to manage its internal equity between staff members and make sure that higher-performing staff members are the retention priority- We will continue to track the situation with Becton, Cherrington, and the rest of the staff and keep you apprised as news unfolds.
